Description
The pathways up onto the moor from Malham are multiple and a little confusing, so I plotted what I actually walked based on the most obvious looking tracks on the ground. The route then stays on the Dales High Way/Pennine Bridleway above Stockdale Farm rather than following the little-used PRoW through the farm buildings. Through Settle it uses a slightly shorter route on quiet roads with some lovely historic buildings that are worth passing

16 Apr 2023I walked from Malham, initially following SetMal One, but on the steep, steady climb up onto the moor, I found I was diverging somewhat, based on the walked tracks on the ground. The views to Malham Cove from the stony lane, then looking back towards Skipton as I gained height, were fantastic, especially of the traditional stone barns and walls. It was a tiring climb though! At the top of the moorland I could also see across to Malham Tarn.
On reaching the Dales High Way/Pennine Bridleway the route became much more obvious, and it seemed pointless to cross the fields and buildings of Stockdale Farm. In fact neither end of that footpath, used by SetMal One, was even visible never mind obvious.
The route downhill also provided great views, this time towards Pendle Hill. It soon became a very quiet tarmacked road, which felt easier going than some of the previous section which was very rocky. However after a while, it was nice to have a bit of sheep pasture to cross in order to cut the corner. The last section of tarmac, steeply down into Settle, was slightly busier, but with lovely views into the town.
I know Settle a little bit, and for me walking in through the quiet historic streets is nicer than a bit of main road and a path next to the car park.
This route lost a star for the amount of tarmac at the Settle end. I suspect staying on the Dales High Way and coming into Settle from the north east would be a better route, and I might try it sometime!.
