For anyone wanting an easy-to-follow option which bypasses the fields, I’m adding a photo showing the line of an excellent alternative, which follows a lovely walled grassy lane all the way up to the moor, where a very obvious path takes you uphill to rejoin the main Dales Way....

Much easier from Grassington to Kettlewell than vice versa as the footpath into Grassington (around the farm) can become a bit vague. Other than that a great route of well used footpaths & well signed along the Dales Way...

The walk along the River Skirfare to Litton was very nice, despite the rain we had to endure. The route crossed the river on stepping stones, but surprisingly, despite a fair bit of rain, I was able to walk on the river bed and hold onto the stones! There were good views of the valleys despite the rain. All-in-all, a very enjoyable walk, despite the weather. I might have given this 5* in good weather with the potential for excellent views....

The walk down the road was fine for walking, and the last section of off-road paths towards Horton was really comfortable and pleasant. It's a nicely varied route with a lot on offer, and a really fun and beautiful (but sometimes challenging!) walk....

We left the appealing town of Settle on a steep climb up Constitution Hill, and were soon off-road. Near the top of the climb, it’s worth a tiny detour to visit Jubilee Cave. However, the views back down into Arncliffe then on to Kettlewell, and all around, were gorgeous, and well worth the climb...

I walked this route from Settle to Kettlewell on a gorgeous fall day. The stretch around Malham Tarn is lovely, a bit of forested walking on an otherwise exposed route. By far for me the highlight of the route was the stretch from Malham Tarn to Arncliffe, which was some amazing high moorland walking....

Nice route over the moors and great views, but lots of stiles, some with the added complication of a gate meant this was quite challenging, even for someone who is relatively young and fit. Quite exposed at the top....

Upon leaving Grassington, it can be a little tricky to find the correct route onto the moor as you bypass a dairy farm - and route finding on the moor may be tricky if visibility is poor After a relatively steep descent and a short bit of walking on the road, the path diverts over multiple small fields of sheep - there are multiple (10+) small squeeze gap stiles with swing gates which can be tricky if you are carrying a large rucksack or have tired legs!...
