16 Apr 2023The route from Hellifield started with a gravel lane, accessed via a level crossing with kissing gates at either side. This turned into a field track as I gained height, and I could look back at great views of Hellifield with Pendle Hill beyond. The route turned off into a field which contained sheep and bullocks. They didn’t take much notice of me though, although the bull in the next field (fenced off) wandered over! A few more fields, with a variety of stiles, took me to the pretty, but facility-free, village of Otterburn. Around this area there was the sound of shooting from the club at Coniston Hall a couple of miles away.
From here the public footpath led through a very smart looking farmhouse and grounds, accessed through some grand, but not locked, gates, with a small “footpath” label. One of the owners, who runs stables there, confirmed that the path goes right past the front of their property. Further along the riverside path I met the other owner, who is the farmer there. We had a really friendly chat about potential conflicts between farmers and walkers, and how most on both sides behave well, but a few on both sides don’t.
More fields, with glimpses across to the amazing Malham Cove, eventually led to Kirkby Malham, which had a tempting pub. There had been a lot of rain recently, so the fields were muddy or boggy in places, despite being in limestone country. From here a well-used footpath led into Malham village, which was very busy with visitors.
This was a very pleasant walk, during which I saw/heard curlew, lapwing, skylark and a weasel. However, between Hellifield and Otterburn, I would have preferred the path I’ve previously used via Dacre Lane. This is higher, with better views, and avoids the cows and the lower wetter fields. I’ll upload this as an alternative route.
