Help connect Lymm
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Lymm’s Slow Ways.

Latest Updates
This is a (hopefully) temporary review to flag the fact that on 1st January 2025 there was a serious breach of the canal, on the towpath side, flooding the surrounding countryside....

I believe it happened very close to where the route leaves the canal at the Swan with Two Nicks pub....

We walked this from Altrincham (after a very nice lunch in The Market House) to Lymm. Mostly follows the Trans Pennine Trail, so it’s straight and therefore straightforward to navigate, if a little monotonous. There were quite a few cyclists out and a couple of horse riders, so keep an ear open for bells and shouts along here....

Heading out from the picturesque village of Lymm via the canal path this was a great route, with varied scenery and easy walking. The walk through the leafy Dunham Massey park past the stately home was lovely, and we glimpsed a stag not far from the path, before crossing a golf course and then the A56 (there is a pedestrian refuse half way across so this was fine). We then headed through the tree lined avenues of Hale into the town centre....
Gismay
The bulk of the route is along the Trans-Pennine Trail which for this stretch is a shared-use path which makes use of a former railway line. This route is probably better suited to cyclists than walkers as the very long, straight section makes it a little monotonous for walking....
RGW
I certainly wouldn’t describe the route as unsafe, as another reviewer has! There is another access point directly north of the Lymm meeting point, but there is no access at OS Grid Ref: SJ 68568 87833, because the former railway line is on an overbridge here....
Mary Oz
Initially following the canal, it then passes through the deer park at Dunham Massey (National Trust property) before crossing a golf course and passing some of the most expensive real estate in the Manchester / Cheshire area. There are good public transport links and a full range of facilities at either end of this walk....
RGW
There was stepped access to leave the towpath and head under the small aqueduct to pass the Swan With Two Nicks pub, although there was the option to leave the towpath slightly earlier along a path which I think would be step-free. There was a short, wooded path onto the golf course, then a short section across open golf course before another wooded path brought us to the A56 road crossing....
Mary Oz
We left the canal and joined the trans pennine trail westwards....
Gismay
A nice short route from Warburton (as a previous reviewer mentioned, it’s a small rural village so there aren’t any facilities here I could see) south where it joins the Trans Pennine Trail westwards before turning south again into Lymm, where there are plenty of pubs and places to eat (and is very picturesque)....
Gismay
Access to the canal is inaccurately plotted, but was not too difficult to find on the ground. Where the TPT was close to the Bridgewater Canal we could see another small aqueduct over a road. We stayed close to the ship canal until reaching the road swing bridge, where we had previously been held up on our bus journey as a ship passed through....
Mary Oz
The pavement into Lymm continued to be quite narrow, and the roads here and earlier were surprisingly busy....
Mary Oz
I walked from Northwich train station to Marbury Country Hall, the paths were wide and very well-maintained. There were a few staircases but overall, it was quite accessible. I would recommend this walk!...
Virginie Assal (she/they)
Once you cross Latchford locks and gain the TPT it is straight to Lymm....
John Croall
Muddy in places, but it is a good walk. Good shops and both ends, with the odd one along the way, and with good transport links, this is a good route, albeit mostly only good for walkers....
Hiking Historian
The route advises us to follow this to the end, but the tarmacced old railway path, part of the Transpennine Trail, is accessible on the left and too good to ignore! A good link route rather than a route to be walked on its own, this is almost fully accessible, were it not for the narrow pavements at the start, and the muddy footpath alongside the old railway....
Hiking Historian
This is a good route that travels across Tatton Park, through Rostherne, a lovely village, along quiet lanes and countryside into Lymm village....
Jenny Allen
Thus route involves walking along busy roads to reach the Bridgewater canal. The route is then direct along the canal towpath to Lymm. I would not walk this route to join the canal towards Lymm....
Jenny Allen
This route is good for cycling, however there are better ways to travel to Lymm than following this route. It involves walking on fairly busy roads to get to the start of the TPT in Altrincham and exits the TPT too early in Lymm. The TPT is not (as a previous reviewer stated) primarily for cycling- its for mixed use - walkers/cyclists/families with pushchairs etc....
Jenny Allen
If intended for cyclists then it is unsuited as this section of the canal is a no cycling zone....
Jenny Allen
This slow way involves a fair amount of road walking although there is no alternative to this due to a lack of rights of way between Warburton and Lymm...
Jenny Allen
The Transpennine Trail is a long distance cycle route developed by Sustrans, and is primarily intended for cyclists (disregard the previous comment above), however walkers are also encouraged to use it, providing they are conscientious of and respectful to cyclists. The path can get very muddy in places, especially in winter and it is crossed by several (non-major) roads. All in all its a pretty safe, direct and easy route to use....
steeve80
Extremely pleasant once out of Warrington and onto the Trans Pennine Trail and then the Bridgewater Canal....
Chris Manasseh
There are barriers between sections of the trail, which can be passed by pedestrians and cyclists, but nothing larger. The road part has narrow but consistent pavement....
