This is a more direct route, and also utilises a quiteier road route. The access on to the Trans Pennine Way is also more inclusive and better surfaced than the canal which can get very muddy and flooded

25 Aug 2024We walked this from Altrincham (after a very nice lunch in The Market House) to Lymm. Mostly follows the Trans Pennine Trail, so it’s straight and therefore straightforward to navigate, if a little monotonous. There were quite a few cyclists out and a couple of horse riders, so keep an ear open for bells and shouts along here. Apart from that, I enjoyed the walk, arriving in the lovely village of Lymm and a refreshing drink sat by the canal out the back of the Golden Fleece.

25 Aug 2024This is a perfectly acceptable Slow Ways route. There are short sections on road at either end which all have pavements and safe crossing points. The bulk of the route is along the Trans-Pennine Trail which for this stretch is a shared-use path which makes use of a former railway line.
This route is probably better suited to cyclists than walkers as the very long, straight section makes it a little monotonous for walking.

25 Aug 2024We walked from Altrincham to Lymm, after a very nice lunch in Altrincham Market. I certainly wouldn’t describe the route as unsafe, as another reviewer has! The roads used to leave the busy start point of the route had safe pavements and crossings. The little road bridge over the canal, although it was single track with no pavement, actually had pedestrian lights.
The Trans Pennine Trail was very safe, pleasant, and direct, although a bit samey after a while! It was surfaced with compacted gravel, which I suspect might have muddy patches at times, but trail shoes would generally be fine. There were benches in places. It was a Saturday, and there were quite a few walkers, cyclists, and even horses out on the track, but everyone was considerate and friendly.
Where the TPT crossed roads, there were various cycle barriers, where the narrowest gap was 65cm. There were supermarkets on reaching the suburban edge of Lymm but that was at 80% through the route.
There is another access point directly north of the Lymm meeting point, but there is no access at OS Grid Ref: SJ 68568 87833, because the former railway line is on an overbridge here. It would be possible to use the field route shown in LymWar One though, in order to avoid a bit of the A6144.
Overall, a good route.

04 Dec 2021This route is good for cycling, however there are better ways to travel to Lymm than following this route. It involves walking on fairly busy roads to get to the start of the TPT in Altrincham and exits the TPT too early in Lymm. The TPT is not (as a previous reviewer stated) primarily for cycling- its for mixed use - walkers/cyclists/families with pushchairs etc.

06 Oct 2023The TPT is a cycle trail, yes walkers are welcome to use it, but it is still a cycle trail. The stretch between Alt-Lymm also forms Route 62 of the national cycle network.

25 Aug 2024Not sure that this route deserves to be flagged for safety. The sections on road all had good pavements and safe crossing points. If you feel there is a better route it is helpful to provide more details - someone will often plot it and add it to the site.

15 Oct 2021 (edited 06 Oct 2023)This majority of this route follows the Transpennine Trial on what was the old Warrington to Altrincham railway line. The Transpennine Trail is a long distance cycle route developed by Sustrans, and is primarily intended for cyclists (disregard the previous comment above), however walkers are also encouraged to use it, providing they are conscientious of and respectful to cyclists. The path can get very muddy in places, especially in winter and it is crossed by several (non-major) roads. All in all its a pretty safe, direct and easy route to use.
