23 Jun 2024We headed out from Lymm onto the Bridgewater canal path. This was quite muddy in places (this was walked in February). We left the canal and joined the trans pennine trail westwards. As it had been raining non stop earlier in the month, Victoria Park in Warrington was a bit flooded, but you could walk round it without the water getting over the tops of your boots. A good varied route though, with canal side, woodland tracks and urban walking.

25 Feb 2024We walked from Lymm on a pleasant February afternoon. Access to the canal is inaccurately plotted, but was not too difficult to find on the ground. The towpath was quite muddy in places, but it was a pretty walk. It included an aqueduct over a road which could be easy to miss!
Access between the canal and the Trans Pennine Trail was via a narrow path past some cottages, then over a footbridge and down some slippery, muddy stairs. The trail was easy to follow although a bit muddy in places, but it was very enjoyably tree-lined. Where the TPT was close to the Bridgewater Canal we could see another small aqueduct over a road.
Soon after leaving the trail, we easily and safely crossed the much bigger Manchester Ship Canal at Latchford Locks. I found this really interesting, and the view of the old viaduct was splendid!
We stayed close to the ship canal until reaching the road swing bridge, where we had previously been held up on our bus journey as a ship passed through. We walked through a gorgeous tunnel painted with Alice in Wonderland murals.
The last third of our walk was mostly pavement pacing through Warrington, but in the middle of this was the pleasant (but slightly flooded) Victoria Park, and a pedestrian suspension bridge over the River Mersey. The weather provided us with some wonderful views from the bridge.
The last bit the route through Warrington shopping centre had been nicely pedestrianised and felt very welcoming.
I really enjoyed this route, very varied and interesting. Full marks from me!.

17 Aug 2023This route is excellent. Take care in Warrington and in Latchford as navigation is up to you. Once you cross Latchford locks and gain the TPT it is straight to Lymm.

27 Mar 2023A good route from urban through rural areas using canals and old railways. Foot-only though, due to use of steps.
From urban Warrington, we work our way down a number of paved roads and over a footbridge before we head onto the tarmac paths of Victoria Park. From there, a few more road walks (paved), and then a tarmac path running alongside the Manchester Ship Canal. Over Thelwall Locks, which is accessible, and then up onto the earthern path of the disused railway, part of the Transpennine Trail.
It's a long and pleasant shady wooded walk. Soon we're at Thelwall Viaduct however, where we have to negotiate a ramp and a subway to get back on route. Steps up to a footbridge takes us to the next stage, the canal towpath. Muddy in places, but it is a good walk.
Arriving in Lymm, we can either use steps past cottages on the left, or under and over the canal bridge, which is step-free. The pavements over the bridge are narrow, however; another obstacle to wheeled users. The end point is near Lymm Cross, which has nearby bus stops.
Good shops and both ends, with the odd one along the way, and with good transport links, this is a good route, albeit mostly only good for walkers.

18 May 2021Extremely pleasant once out of Warrington and onto the Trans Pennine Trail and then the Bridgewater Canal. Prior to this it is understandably urban, but does have a nice section through Victoria Park and a fascinating stretch along the Ship Canal. Mostly flat, but not suitable for wheelchairs due to steps where the route leaves the TP trail (plus a few other awkward barriers and some rough/muddy sections). Very accurately mapped, except that the path takes a different wiggle at Latchford Locks to cross the Ship Canal (this is well signposted and might only be temporary). Several road crossings through Warrington. Nice pubs in Lymm.
