Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

03 Jan 2025I have not walked the entirety of this route, but I expect that I would normally have given this route 4* or 5*. However...
This is a (hopefully) temporary review to flag the fact that on 1st January 2025 there was a serious breach of the canal, on the towpath side, flooding the surrounding countryside. I believe it happened very close to the Swan with Two Nicks pub at Little Bollington.

The canal here is the responsibility of a private company rather than the Canal and River Trust. Who knows when this will be repaired? A similar breach happened in 1971 which took two years to repair.

04 Dec 2021Thus route involves walking along busy roads to reach the Bridgewater canal. The route is then direct along the canal towpath to Lymm. I would not walk this route to join the canal towards Lymm.

25 Aug 2024I agree that this is not the nicest, not most direct route to the canal, but the route should not be failed on safety grounds, because it has safe pavements all the way to the canal. However the route to access the towpath from the A56 is inaccurate, you would need to via the car park to the north of the canal/east of the A56. So a fail on inaccuracy grounds would be fair enough.
The canal would still make a nice alternative route to the Trans Pennine Trail, but with a better access route, perhaps through Oldfield Brow, or Dunham Massey. -
