Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

A nice short route from Warburton (as a previous reviewer mentioned, it’s a small rural village so there aren’t any facilities here I could see) south where it joins the Trans Pennine Trail westwards before turning south again into Lymm, where there are plenty of pubs and places to eat (and is very picturesque)....

This was a nicely varied route that took in canal paths, a busy town centre, woodland footpaths and a gloriously painted tunnel....

Arriving at the Manchester Ship Canal, there was a sizeable road swing bridge, preceded by a glorious foot tunnel with Alice in Wonderland wall painting. I found the ship canal section very interesting, with an imposing disused railway viaduct, and a set of locks where we crossed the canal on a safe and easy to follow fenced path....

The pavement into Lymm continued to be quite narrow, and the roads here and earlier were surprisingly busy....

From urban Warrington, we work our way down a number of paved roads and over a footbridge before we head onto the tarmac paths of Victoria Park. Good shops at the Warrington end, with the odd one along the way, and with good transport links, this is a good route, albeit mostly only good for walkers....

The route advises us to follow this to the end, but the tarmacced old railway path, part of the Transpennine Trail, is accessible on the left and too good to ignore! A good link route rather than a route to be walked on its own, this is almost fully accessible, were it not for the narrow pavements at the start, and the muddy footpath alongside the old railway....

Once over the fields, another unpaved road into Glazebrook, before we take another footpath and footbridge into Cadishead. A good mix of road and rural footpaths, and utilising the one good crossing of the Manchester Ship Canal; but, due to terrain and the odd stile, very much foot-only....

Walk this routeI'll go into more detail about the route when I post an alternative, but this one fails at the last hurdle: the last section, along or alongside an old railway embankment, is impossible, as it is sealed at the end on the main road into Irlam....

This slow way involves a fair amount of road walking although there is no alternative to this due to a lack of rights of way between Warburton and Lymm...
Jenny Allen
Before this it is understandably urban, but does have a nice section through Victoria Park and a historically fascinating stretch along the Ship Canal....
Chris Manasseh
There are barriers between sections of the trail, which can be passed by pedestrians and cyclists, but nothing larger. The road part has narrow but consistent pavement....
