Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Hiking Historian
26 Mar 2023A foot-only route from one side of the Manchester Ship Canal to the other, using roads and footpaths across sometimes muddy terrain.
From the centre of Warburton (a couple of bus stops, but no amenities, except the excellent historic church), we take the steadily uphill road to the toll bridge. Although free for pedestrians, the pavements aren't great to and from the bridge itself: narrow and unkempt in places, so only passable by foot.
Once over the bridge, we eventually come to a busy main road. There is a crossing at the lights, and a stile through a hedge takes us onto a track through and away from a farm yard. This ends at an unpaved road, which, fortunately, doesn't last too long and links with a paved road into Hollins Green.
A few footpaths through residential estates and parks, and, once past the local pubs and shops, an earthern footpath alongside a cemetery wall before heading out across fields. It can be muddy at times, but it's nice to get away from the houses!
Once over the fields, another unpaved road into Glazebrook, before we take another footpath and footbridge into Cadishead. Once through some residential streets, a footpath takes us over an old railway and onto Irlam's residential roads. A few turns, and we're on the final approach to Irlam station.
A good mix of road and rural footpaths, and utilising the one good crossing of the Manchester Ship Canal; but, due to terrain and the odd stile, very much foot-only.
