Help connect Kingston Vale

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Kingston Vale’s Slow Ways.

After crossing underneath Kingston Road the next section is through Putney Common, which is nicely wooded (photo #3)....

Great route, but there is a fairly steep climb involved on the southern side, with the same and even steeper decline on the northern side of the trail. The crossing of the A3 into Wimbledon Common is annoying (but not strictly part of this route)....

We followed this route as it was, but you could take a number of detours as you'd like to explore Richmond Park or follow wider paths if you'd rather not go through too much grass/bracken. We'd hoped there would be some picnic benches somewhere by Pen Ponds, but it looks like you'd have to get these more around the car park where the kiosk is rather than near the pond....

Walk this route

Once you get off the main road, it's a really pleasant stroll through suburban streets and the common. I did have to check the map a couple of times to make sure I was taking the right one, but generally it's straightforward and easy to navigate. Can't think of a better way between the two places!...

The section in Richmond itself was really busy, especially near the station as the trains weren't going and there was a long queue for the bus....

A3 crossing at Kingston Vale via traffic lights. Easy access to Wimbledon Common....

Walk this route

The last 30% of this route is quiet residential but the rest is a lovely jaunt through Richmond Park. The route follows a quiet footpath away from the cycle superhighway. There’s a slight climb at one point but nothing too taxing....

I walked this route from Wimbledon to Kingston Vale on a muddy January morning!...

Walk this route

I loved that the route felt like it passed through a lot of different parts of Richmond Park and didn't just follow one "main path" while still being quite direct....

Steep hill at Wimbledon, and the paths on the common may get muddy over winter. I really enjoyed walking this route. When combined with Richkin One, the overall Richmond - Wimbledon Slow Way delivers a full 5 stars....

Walk this route

This is a route that works ok, it will get you from Kingston Vale to Kingston without much mishap, but I would prefer if it was on footpath rather than the road in Richmond Park....

Walk this route

This is a route I made in response to Kinkin One, as an option that follows footpaths rather than the road through Richmond Park. At Kingston Vale the route does a dog-leg to the final meeting point....

Additional review to alert that part of this route across the Pen Ponds Causeway will be closed from 16th August - 4th October 2021 (dates subject to change) while the causeway is raised to cope with 'one in a thousand year' flooding. Maybe there will be a signposted diversion, otherwise refer to maps to steer around the closure, which will involve walking round the ponds. Still a 5 star route!...

The route crosses Putney Heath and Wimbledon Common before arriving at Kingston Vale to connect with routes through Richmond Park to Richmond and Kingston....

Walk this route

Walk uphill to one of the lesser known park gates, and across the park to Robin Hood Gate and the A3, with opportunities to see fantastic urban wildlife. The meeting point creates a bit of a dog leg for anyone joining two routes together, and can easily be skipped altogether by crossing the A3 directly outside Robin Hood gate to reach Wimbledon Common, rather than walking to the meeting point, then crossing the A3 by footbridge....
