Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Putney’s Slow Ways.

I followed the route but ended up on a footpath and had a lovely walk but not easy to follow across open ground....
Lizbiz70
It traverses long streets ad reduces the need to cross lots of roads....

The beginning is a monotonous Road but past the bus yard it gets into lovely woodland....

Once you leave aside the busy high street of Putney, and make it to the river (photo #1, #2) it is a really lovely walk....
Derick Rethans
After crossing underneath Kingston Road the next section is through Putney Common, which is nicely wooded (photo #3)....

I think it's fairly easy to find a less muddy, but slightly longer, route, following the main path....
Derick Rethans
The bridge was nicest, the busy stretch in Putney the least as it was so busy....

Not a lot to add to the two very thorough reviews already posted - I agree with them both....
Martin McGovern
I agree with the earlier reviewer - this is a pleasant walk but there isn't a huge amount to comment on. The late Victorian housing around the middle of the route was the most notable thing for me....

Lingfield Road avoids the High Street then Oldfield Road leads into Sunnyside Passage and Malcolm Road....

At the Roehampton Estate, I took a path just after the junction of Danebury Avenue and Highcliffe Drive around the tower blocks to Clarence Lane....

A perfectly good route with a nice park and views across the Thames....
Strider
There is a café and toilets (wheelchair friendly) just inside Richmond Park, the park is closed to traffic at night as is the café and toilets but walkers can still walk through....

From Putney's busy High Street (photo #1) it soon follows quiet residential streets (photo #2). After a few more residential streets (photo #5), you get a great view of the Wembley Arch (photo #6)....
Derick Rethans
You first pass by "The Grand" (photo #1), a lovely building housing a nightclub, before being able to peek over the wall to see Clapham Junction station (photo #2). Then there was a long down road towards the Thames (photo #3), around Plantation Wharf and some more lovely buildings (photo #4)....

I walked from Putney to Chiswick (Turnham Green tube). There is a riverside terraced walk, a walk through Chiswick Park and onto Chiswick Common to Turnham Green tube....
Strider
Worth the extra bit of distance to follow the river along a very nice stretch (apart from going round the Refuse centre). A short and green section through the park as well. The walk up Putney High street is only short and means passing many shops and cages etc....
Dannyash
Really nice route along the river with the majority of the walk being away from roads. The start and the end have small sections on busy roads but once you hit the river it is a lovely walk. Some nice cafe's restaurants and pubs along the riverfront as well which makes it ideal for a short walk or stopping as part of a longer one...
Dannyash
This is a very nice easy going route along the river. Nice alternative to the South Bank option....

The path is wide, and the route is an especially good one for birders as you can often spot birds visiting the nearby London Wetland Centre....

For me, highlights included walking through the beautiful arches of Henry Prince Estate (where the mayor of London Sadiq Khan was born) and across the lovely river Wandle....

Mary Oz added Putcla four, a new walk from Putney to Clapham Junction
Walk this routeThe path along the river gives you lovely views of London on both sides, and the path is very wide for the many people who use it for walking and cycling. It's a great, relaxing atmosphere in general....
Ingrina
The walk into the sea of traffic which is Hammersmith is a short shock but crossing is well managed and the upside is a plethora of refreshment and travel options....
David Sanderson
After the end of the park, it’s necessary to move inland slightly, following the Thames Path still, to cross footbridges over the River Wandle as it reaches the Thames. The path stays inland a bit longer as it skirts some new building and a refuse site (not smelly!) but soon returns to the river, only to leave it again to go around the Ship pub and under the Wandsworth Bridge....
Mary Oz
This is a pleasant route quiet urban roads to the Thames....
Strider
Enjoyed this route due to the variety of London hustle and bustle, quiet residential streets, and walking through parks. It can get really busy and noisy at parts, but they aren't very long and it was a great way to get a glimpse of what's in this area. Good amenities at either end of the route....
Ingrina
From Earlsfield the route soon left a busy main road, to pass through nice arches, under some housing, and then across a pleasant footbridge over the pretty River Wandle....
Mary Oz
Quite a variety of architecture (and an estate Sadiq Khan grew up on, I am reliably informed)....
Strider
Route which makes excellent use of a string of parks which contrasts with the short sections of busy road....
David Sanderson
Putney High Street is a good one for food and shops, and the last approach to Hammersmith is car-y but very short....
mtormey
- The route largely follows the Wandle Trail between Earslfield and Wandsworth, which means you'll follow a gorgeous series of excellent parks....

Nice route away from roads through King George's Park to Wandsworth, then using quiet residential streets to Putney....
Bostal Boy
Agree withe comments of the previous reviewer once you have made it from Hammersmith Broadway and there are a couple of ways to get to the river, then the bridge is now reduced to one way down the paths either side of the roadway....
John Mickleburgh
The southern route to Putney from Barnes. Greener than the northern but less of the river....
PaulH
I thought it was an enjoyable walk which mainly follows the Thames Path....
Bostal Boy
It is a pretty direct route from A to B using quiet residential streets....
Bostal Boy
Steps at Barnes Bridge, and mud on Putney Common, otherwise good paths and pavements throughout. After a short walk along the riverbank, view of Fulham football ground (photo), the route turns inland to follow the Beverley Brook, and then crosses Putney Common (mud, photo), and Barnes Common (photo)....
Jane Taylor
On the Fulham side of the river the route is about as good as it can be, using mostly quiet roads, touching base at Parsons Green, and making good use of Eel Brook Common (photo)....
Jane Taylor
This route has a good balance of directness/pleasantness - it swerves a bit to take in Wimbledon and Putney Commons but it's well worth the swerve, a more direct route would be pavement walk all the way....
Jane Taylor
I've made a new version, Putwim Two, with a few alterations to correct the routing error, and to make the route a little quieter in places....
Jane Taylor
Now that Hammersmith Bridge is open for pedestrians again, time to walk and review this route....
Jane Taylor
My view is that the diversion isn't worth it - it involves walking the length of Putney High Street, one of the most polluted streets in London, and at the Clapham end a hill and more busy roads. In addition the routing at Wandsworth Bridge isn't accurate. imo the best of the three routes currently on offer between Putney and Clapham Junction is Putcla Three...
Jane Taylor
This route has many good features, but it is less than satisfactory because it follows the busy A3209 rather more than is necessary. For this reason I've remade it as Putcla Three, which I would recommend rather than this one....
Jane Taylor
Unless you have a particularly good reason to want to follow this route I'd recommend Putear Two, which is similar length, but considerably quieter, and has the advantage that it can be walked 24/7....
Jane Taylor
Good route making use of quiet residential streets between Putney and Wandsworth, and staying with the lit 24/7 section of King George's Park between Wandsworth and Earlsfield. Would recommend....

Jane Taylor added Putcla three, a new walk from Putney to Clapham Junction
Walk this routeI set out to walk and review Putcla Two, it was going really well and set for 5 stars, but the section of the A3209 under the railway lines was so unpleasant I decided to find an alternative route which restores the 5 star status, and review that instead - so here it is, and thanks to the maker of Putcla Two for making most of this one too. I found this route satisfyingly direct, surprisingly quiet (with a couple of short exceptions, not bad for this part of London), and the excellent refreshments at Wandsworth Town were very welcome. Top marks from me....
Jane Taylor
It is a good direct route, largely off-road, although I do prefer the leafier alternative Hamput One, which crosses the river on Hammersmith Bridge....
Jane Taylor
This route crosses Putney Bridge and takes the north side of the Thames to Hammersmith, so it's a bit longer than the alternative Chiput One. Comparing the two I would say I preferred Chiput One (the other one), as it's slightly shorter and greener, there's less time in the polluted Putney Bridge/High Street area, and it crosses the river on the magnificent, and currently traffic free, Hammersmith Bridge. The path turns away from the river at Fullers brewery and crosses the Great West Road (underpass), then heads direct to Chiswick meeting point at Turnham Green station....
Jane Taylor
This is a route with plenty of riverside paths (parts of which may flood at high tide), refreshment opportunities, and points of interest. There's no flights of stairs and overall the route is fairly flat and on good paths, even along the river....
Jane Taylor
The route crosses Putney Heath and Wimbledon Common before arriving at Kingston Vale to connect with routes through Richmond Park to Richmond and Kingston....
Jane Taylor
I'm leaving a second (unfavourable) review, because despite being an excellent route in almost all respects, on reconsideration I don't think it should be included in the Slow Ways network, due to using a 'cut through' path by Queen Mary's hospital which isn't a right of way. So I'm flagging it. Please use Ricput 2 which has been corrected, it's a gorgeous walk through Richmond Park, with some very interesting architecture on the way....

Jane Taylor added Ricput three, a new walk from Richmond-upon-Thames to Putney
Walk this routeFrom Richmond Station walk along the busy main street and head towards East Sheen on the same route as Ricput 2. Barnes Common has mostly well-lit paths, pass by Barnes Station (possible coffee stop) and continue on the path alongside the 'up' platform all the way to the main road (B306, Queen's Ride)....
Jane Taylor
Jane Taylor added Ricput two, a new walk from Richmond-upon-Thames to Putney
Walk this routeRicput 2 sorts out that niggle, and also improves the route through the Roehampton estate with more green and less steep road (and a bus stop and shop). Possible mud on East Sheen common, but so far I've only walked this route when it's been dry underfoot....
Jane Taylor
I loved walking this route between Richmond and Putney, it's got lots of off-road/greenery while staying reasonable direct, highlights include Richmond Park and East Sheen Common, very enjoyable. Toilets in Richmond Park, cafe near Roehampton Gate, and often an ice-cream van at Sheen Gate....
Jane Taylor
The last 10 minutes down Putney Hill to Putney Station was more frenetic but there's no way round that....

Cross road and go along Lingfield Road opposite until you reach Ridgway. Cross road and go along alley immediately opposite to St George's Road....

If coming from Putney, carry on past Hammersmith Bridge and cross at Barnes Bridge....
Barnes Raider
Hammersmith bridge is closed at the moment so you’ve got to continue to Putney Bridge to cross the Thames. It appears unlikely that Hammersmith bridge will be open any time soon. Other than that it’s quite a nice flat route....
