Help connect Exmouth
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Exmouth’s Slow Ways.

Travelling east you could avoid the mud by following Exmbud Three (on the cycle route NCR 2) as far as Castle Lane (SY 04308 82288) and then walk south on Castle Lane and continue south onto the footpath to the golf course to rejoin Exmbud Two or vice versa....

The footpath along the front between Dawlish Station and the footbridge at SX 97092 77341 is now open....

Goosemoor Nature Reserve was exciting in mid-June, with towering foliage - quite muddy in places but not problematically so. I'd love to walk it in different seasons....

There are some points at Lympstone and Exton where you are on narrow Devon lanes with traffic: on the day we walked this, all the drivers were considerate of walkers and cyclists....
Liz Halliday
A really enjoyable and easy to follow route. Great opportunities for birdwatching and some great views across the estuary. Easy to follow....

I've walked this route many times. Such a gorgeous evening for it today....
danravenellison
This is generally a flat and level route of 7 kilometres in length according to the Coast Path distance calculator....

Lovely walk surrounded by nature in a quiet area near Dawlish. Some of the views behind Starcross were beautiful and I had no idea they existed! The toilets by Starcross were very handy....
Dorleta Diego
I did find the static caravan park in the middle of the walk slightly jarring however, especially after such breathtaking and wild views....
James Green
Lovely walk that includes around the back of Dawlish Warren and Starcross to the river and on to Exmouth by ferry. Some really beautiful views and a feeling you are walking along some paths that have history going back hundreds of years....
James Leigh
A lovely walk along the coast path. Stunning views, well marked path. Expect hills....

I preferred walking along the coastal route, but this way was flatter and easier. Still a 5 start route for me!...

Not the most interesting views (the coastal path is better for that), but easy walking....

Walk this routeIf you've got new white trainers they'll probably stay 95% white. I'm going to walk this route again in the summer and look forward to all the leaves being on the trees....

If you are looking for a circular walk from either, combining this route with Exmbud Two makes for a really varied and enjoyable 17km walk. It's an interesting and sometimes curious section part of the coast, including sandy beaches, 250 million year old rocks at Orcombe Point, an enormous static caravan park (with some caravan locations looking like they'll be in the sea sometime soonish), a military firing range (you can't walk through it), patches of lush woodland, stunning coastal views and the quaint delights of Budleigh Salterton....

The route is not lit, I just enjoy walking in the night and this route was easy enough with my torch. I completed the route as part of a circular, combing this route with Exmbud One earlier in the day. I think there might be another couple of good route options for Exmbud....

Walk this routeThe Starcross Ferry does not operate October - April so a walker wanting to reach Exmouth would need to catch a local train from Starcross rail station to Exmoth via Exeter Central....

A largely level route with fine views across the estuary. Much of the route follows the Exe Estuary Trail, which is a shared footpath and cycle trail. It’s easy to do the return leg by train or bus as the route follows the rail line....

Brilliant and beautiful walk that's easy to navigate. There are some wonderful views across the Exe estuary and some good places to stop for drinks too....

Food/drink/and toilets are readily accessible in Dawlish, Dawlish Warren, Starcross and Exmouth. Continue along the seawall and, approaching Dawlish Warren, take the footbridge (50 steps) which will link with a clearly signposted public bridle path signposted Cockwood and Starcross. Dawlish Warren, Cockwood, Starcross Ferry. Continue through the tourist Mecca of Dawlish Warren2 Follow the shared cycle/walking path to and through Starcross until the station footbridge....

This route pretty much follows the Exe Estuary Trail (often signposted route 2), a shared off-road path. As mapped it also uses a few sections of footpaths (such as part of the East Devon Way towards Exmouth), which are largely avoidable by following route 2, which would be my suggestion if you are wheeling or are walking alone and want to stay in more public areas. Lovely views of the Exe Estuary, places to eat and drink in Topsham, Exton, Lympstone and Exmouth....
