Help connect Topsham
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Topsham’s Slow Ways.

the alternative Coast Path route is signed and takes the route above the cliffs between the two footbridges. On the day I walked the route in early November after days of heavy rain the road north of Starcross was closed, as it was flooded....

Walk this routeGoosemoor Nature Reserve was exciting in mid-June, with towering foliage - quite muddy in places but not problematically so. I'd love to walk it in different seasons....

A Flat, easy moderate walk. Toilets and refreshments on route....

There are some points at Lympstone and Exton where you are on narrow Devon lanes with traffic: on the day we walked this, all the drivers were considerate of walkers and cyclists....
Liz Halliday
A really enjoyable and easy to follow route. Great opportunities for birdwatching and some great views across the estuary. Easy to follow....

There are options for those wheeling or maybe have mobility on a couple of short tight sections. But overall this is a lovely and easy route....

I've walked this route many times. Such a gorgeous evening for it today....

If you plan on cycling it, instead of following the coast path just use National Cycle Rte 2 for a small stretch at the beginning....

Stage 1 Dawlish Station to Starcross Station 6.5k. This section hugs the coast as close as possible using the SW Coast Path to Dawlish Warren and Dawlish Warren Road to Cockwood before finishing along the A379 to Starcross.. c) After a further 110m heading inland, and by St Mary’s Church Hall, join the shared cycle/pedestrian bridle way and follow it into Dawlish Warren.. d) Continue through Dawlish Warren (signposted “Cockwood and Starcross”) escaping left opposite Dawlish Sands Caravan Park (3.3km) onto the signposted shared cycle/pedestrian bridle way which runs parallel to the road and crosses it on one occasion (3.76km). e) Cross the A379 at the pedestrian controlled traffic lights to join a further shared cycle/pedestrian way to Starcross.. a) Follow Ferry Road, Follett Road and Station Road to arrive at Topsham Station Shortest (1½-2km) is to join at the Exminster/A379 roundabout (bus stop for Dawlish or Counteswear) by retracing your steps to take Station Road, a narrow, speed-humped, 10mph access road which allows vehicular access to the canal for launching canoes or paddle boards...

It continues through Ludwell Valley Park where it seemed a shame to be sticking to the tarmac and not going onto one of the tracks through the park itself but I agree with the first reviewer that this makes it very suitable for anyone wanting to cycle and there are still some good views of the park....

HOWEVER, one of the paths alongside the railway isn't for bikes so one would have to travel through Newcourt instead....

I thought I'd break in my first Slow Ways submission with a walk that is right on my doorstep - I am reasonably familiar with the route, but it was a good opportunity to trial the process of downloading a .GPX, uploading to OS Maps and navigating offline. I found this to be an easy walk, the only section that may prove to be difficult for some is around Old Sludge Beds Nature Reserve (the M5 bridge, for a more clear reference). Top tip - towards the start of the walk, I would encourage a short detour through Belle View park for vibrant biodiversity, it reconnects with the mapped route. Music listened to on walk, artist & album:...
James Green
Followed this route on a bike (tarmacked paths/lanes/roads all the way) and enjoyed exploring the cycling & walking infrastructure around eastern Exeter. Route description is accurate, although the route is a bit wiggly (I took many a wrong turn on my first attempt). Enjoyable nonetheless and would work well as a commute....
Ciara
The only reason I don’t give it 5 stars is because it does rely on a seasonal ferry, although getting the ferry does add to the overall experience....

I love looking at the changing colours across the Exe and all the birds in the estuary. It's mostly on paths, but there is a small section where you need to walk on the road. It wasn't a problem though....

The route follows the river Exe through marsh, woods, fields and historic ports with views to the hills, river and city....

I recommend combining it with Exetop one if you want create a loop... just make sure the ferry is running!...

The route is a little difficult to navigate at the initial stage once you leave the city centre and we made a few wrong turns. However, once you're outside of the Exeter city area, it's very easy just to follow the river. There are a few more busy roads than I would wish for on a walking route of this length, but otherwise, there's a lot to see....

I've created this route as an alternative to Dawtop One while the South West Coast Path is closed through part of Dawlish....
danravenellison
You will need to get the ferry across the Exe to complete the journey, but this only adds to the pleasure if you've got the time and can afford the ticket....
danravenellison
There are lots of good routes and ways to get between Topsham and Exeter - and this is one of them!...
pilea
This is a good walk if you are able-bodied however the last part from Glasshouse Lane to Topsham is not suitable if you have mobility issues as it includes a narrow goat walk and tidal reedbeds....
Liz Halliday
A largely level route with fine views across the estuary. Much of the route follows the Exe Estuary Trail, which is a shared footpath and cycle trail. It’s easy to do the return leg by train or bus as the route follows the rail line....
nandm
Easy to navigate and lots of good places to rest and grab a drink at either end. Others may know of better routes. Another reviewer has noted issues with potential flooding....
danravenellison
Brilliant and beautiful walk that's easy to navigate. There are some wonderful views across the Exe estuary and some good places to stop for drinks too....

Food and toilet facilities are available in Dawlish Warren and Starcross and several pubs offering food are en route. After 1k take a signposted right turn shortly before the Rockstone Flats to drop steeply down to the railway and cross the Rockstone stepped footbridge to re-join the seawall to Dawlish Warren (Inappropriate for wheels). (Wheels can continue along the A379 shared path to the junction with Dawlish Warren Road before following the surfaced bridle path to reconnect in Dawlish Warren.). Stage 1 Dawlish Station to Starcross Station 6.5k. b) Continue to, and cross the railway, at the Dawlish Warren footbridge to join the shared cycle/pedestrian bridle way from Dawlish to Dawlish Warren.? Opposite Dawlish Sands Caravan Park escape left onto the shared cycle/pedestrian bridle way (signposted) which runs alongside the road and crosses it on one occasion. This leads onto a footpathed stretch of the road to Cockwood Harbour round which itself there is no footpath.. d) Cross the A379 at the pedestrian controlled traffic lights to join a further shared cycle/pedestrian way to Starcross.. Stage 3 Topsham Ferry to Topsham Station 700m (of which walking 500m) a) Follow Ferry Road, Follett Road and Station Road to arrive at Topsham Station...
Tony Leigh
This route pretty much follows the Exe Estuary Trail (often signposted route 2), a shared off-road path. As mapped it also uses a few sections of footpaths (such as part of the East Devon Way towards Exmouth), which are largely avoidable by following route 2, which would be my suggestion if you are wheeling or are walking alone and want to stay in more public areas. Lovely views of the Exe Estuary, places to eat and drink in Topsham, Exton, Lympstone and Exmouth....
Devongirl
Mostly a good route, though from Countess Weir onwards to Topsham I'd use Topsham road as this route suggests a river path which has a very narrow segment (and steps) and can flood at high tides....
