Help connect Coniston

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Coniston’s Slow Ways.

Fairly easy navigation, Nice and safe with stunning views. A superb walk as is or two if broken at Ambleside....

Basically the route is copied (more or less) from ConWin(one) which also goes to Ambleside from Coniston....

Inevitably, having to cross from Langdale to Little Langdale to Yewdale, there's a bit of up and down between valleys, but nothing too strenuous, taking around 3 hours. The section from Little Langdale to Yewdale / Consiton takes you above some of the more dramatic quarried sections overlooking Tilberthwiate before descending on a short section of (quiet) single track road to Yewdale....

The route takes you around the shoulder of Loughrigg Fell (photo 1) to Skelwith Bridge (Chesters at Skelwith Bridge a good food stop if you need one). From Skelwith Bridge there's a delightful wooded section around Skelwith Force (impressive after lots of rain) (photo 2) and over the footbridge (photo 3) heading towards Colwith (photo 4) all on gravel tracks. When you emerge from Colwith Woods you hit the main road crossing the watershed into the Coniston region....

This is a beautiful walk with stunning views of Windemere from both Todd Crag and High Skelghyll, and visiting the very pretty village of Hawkshead. It is a long walk taking about 8 hours plus stops but there are plenty of pleasant opportunities for refreshments, and you can do it as 2 legs stopping at Ambleside. I got a bit lost in Grizedale forest, not due to a lack of paths, but due to a multiplicity of them eventually having to stay as close as I could to a compass bearing....

Much of the route goes through forest and some of this , particularly around Tarn Hows is a bit scarred by the trees which have fallen in the recent storms,...
