The nearby cafe at the Old Post Office Troutbeck is not open on Monday and does not open until 10 am on other days - early starters will be disappointed....

I was going to walk the much more interesting Ambwin2, but due to heavy rain the night before which continued all day during the walk, I opted for this more direct route....

Not much in the way of refreshment stops, but plenty at either end and some great picnic spots on the way....

As pointed out this is shared with cyclists but my experience in late November was that there were a few slow/careful cyclists on the path and any fast cyclists were on the road. But as pointed out in previous reviews the route is flat, easy to navigate, direct and with great views.?...

Basically the route is copied (more or less) from ConWin(one) which also goes to Ambleside from Coniston....

Starting at Chapel Style this nice walk takes you up over the fells past Loughrigg tarn before crossing the river into Ambleside. A few elevation changes along the route, not to much and plenty of natural places to catch your breath. Sometimes struggled to get an accurate gps location particularly near Chapel Style but the route is fairly straightforward Would recommend this walk...

A fairly easy walk to Windermere from Ambleside Starts in the centre with excellent shops and cafes. On route there is a Tesco and a couple of Spars for refreshments. The route is pavements to Ambleside pier then shortly afterwards you find yourself near the stunning lake. Further on you will pass the Low Wood bay whos bus stop is reportedly the most scenic in Great Britain with views over the lake. The Low Wood also has a water sports centre with activities for hire. Next you will pass (some pathways are narrow here Brockhole visitor centre and White Cross bay before reaching The Sun Inn with a left fork just before it. A small incline leads you on. Later you will walk some pathways in woodland before eventually dropping down into Windermere Quite a good walk but I prefer Amwin two. Happy walking!...

This is a really pleasant walk from Ambleside to Windermere via woodland and hills overlooking lake Windermere often. As regards suitably I would say that you would need to be on foot and reasonably fit as there are elevation changes that may need you to have a minute. Not suitable for wheelchairs. Starting in Ambleside where there is an abundance of shops and food amenities. Also a Tesco for your packed lunch if you haven’t brought one already. Also I would recommend the Apple Pie shop. Best apple pie I’ve ever tasted! Onto the walk, leaving Ambleside streets you begin uphill after a short time which is reasonably steep in parts. Plenty of places for momentary stops to take in the view of the lake and fields. Also a few seats natural or otherwise. Lovely wooded area further on with some streams. Very peaceful. More uphill while you climb higher and views of the lake are stunning! Further on hillsides and rolling fields with sheep and cows grazing. Other walkers seemed to be quite prepared with their walking (ski type) sticks and good footwear. I would definitely recommend walking boots due to the sometimes uneven surfaces. Plenty of places for a lunch stop and a place on route too. Down the hill to Windermere with a few uphills too. All very pleasant A great walk ending near Windermere train station and bus hub. Easy to catch a bus back to Ambleside. I think it’s the 599 only costs £2 17/05/23 Oh one point to note is that the gps signal if using a smart phone is not that great so location accuracy is not perfect. My cell provider is O2 so may vary. That said if you are heading towards Windermere with the lake on the right of you there are also various signs too so you shouldn’t go far off track. Happy walking!...

The majority of the climbing from Ambleside to the pass is along a good track (photo 1) which gradually gets steeper towards the pass itself (photo2). The path from the pass down to Patterdale is a little less well defined (photo 3), but still clearly navigable with beautiful views to the rugged head of the Patterdale valley....

The route takes you around the shoulder of Loughrigg Fell (photo 1) to Skelwith Bridge (Chesters at Skelwith Bridge a good food stop if you need one). From Skelwith Bridge there's a delightful wooded section around Skelwith Force (impressive after lots of rain) (photo 2) and over the footbridge (photo 3) heading towards Colwith (photo 4) all on gravel tracks. When you emerge from Colwith Woods you hit the main road crossing the watershed into the Coniston region....

Its a lovely route with a mixture of terrains and some terrific views of Lake Windermere just after the climb out of Ambleside....

This is a wonderful route that typifies what makes a good Slow Way – some ancient tracks, spectacular views over Windermere and towards the Langdales but still direct between Ambleside and Windermere. Navigation is generally easy but there are a couple of points where it is easy to go off route....

Possibly useful as "bail-out" route if the weather is particularly poor or you are very tired....

Is pushchair friendly along its entire length (but would stick to Bog lane rather than the short Jeffy Knotts woodland diversion if on/with wheels). The short diversion through the woods at Jeffy Knotts is delightful but easy to miss if you are not looking out for it (entrances shown in Photos 1 and 2)....

From Chapel Stile to Skelwith Bridge the route follows a beautiful footpath. From there it follows minor roads, including the very quiet Bog Lane, to Clappersgate. Then it's just a mile on the pavement alongside the A593 into Ambleside.....

I walked it from Chapel Stile to Ambleside. The only issue that I had with it was that even on a damp grey Saturday afternoon in November the stretch from Chapel Stile to Skelwith Bridge was packed with walkers. It just shows how pleasant a walk it is and it is great to see everyone out....

Walk this routeThis is a decent, efficient walk, skirting above Windermere, thus avoiding the road for this part, and ending/starting at Windermere Railway Station. However, nearly all of the route is using roadside paved paths - to be fair this still a good trip, but some fun can be had with a decent map, if you don't mind a couple of extra miles......
