Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

08 Apr 2023A lovely and direct route largely along Scandale that respects the local topography. It is a fell route with a fair bit of climbing, although nothing particularly technically challenging. A little more attractive than AmbPat Two, which follows the Stock Ghyll valley to the east, although slightly more effort as it climbs to a higher point on Scandale pass (610m as opposed to Kirkstone Pass's 450m).
We walked this from Ambleside to Patterdale. As a local resident I know the exit roads from Ambleside well, but can be a bit tricky to choose the right one if you don't know the area, so worth checking the route carefully at the start. After that though the navigation is easy for the entire route as it heads north up the valley to the pass then down the valley on the other side to Patterdale.
The majority of the climbing from Ambleside to the pass is along a good track (photo 1) which gradually gets steeper towards the pass itself (photo2). There are a couple of sections that can get quite wet after lots of rain, but there are various stepping stones and bypasses that can take you though them with dry feet.
The path from the pass down to Patterdale is a little less well defined (photo 3), but still clearly navigable with beautiful views to the rugged head of the Patterdale valley. Once down to valley level, the path turns to a flat well defined track (photo 4) along the banks of Brothers Water. This is a lovely section, and easy walk for tired legs. The northernmost 3km follows the Kirkstone pass road which is not quite so pretty, although it is only the last km or so that involves walking on the verge/pavement of the road itself.

24 Apr 2022This is a beautiful walk through Scandale and over the Scandale Pass. Not knowing Ambleside well, finding the correct road out of the town was a bit difficult. The trick is to follow signs for 'Sweden Bridge'.

19 Jan 2022This is a great walk but it is definitely a hill walk. There are boggy sections and it goes over a high pass in the mountains.
