Help connect Shap

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Shap’s Slow Ways.

I walked this route on a lovely late summer day, from Shap to Tebay. The route followed the Coast to Coast route for the first half, although I hadn’t realised this when I plotted it, as it’s not currently labelled on the OS Map around here. It meant that the route was pretty easy to follow on the ground though, and was well-trodden. I stopped at the highest point of the route, about 40% through, where there was a lot of exposed limestone which made excellent seating! A short road section led to the end point in the pleasant railway village of Tebay....

I was pleasantly surprised by the fields at the start of this walk from Shap, following yesterday’s trials. From Rosgill to Bampton Grange, the sheep fields continued, but now alongside the River Lowther. The parkland was all rather lovely and well kept, and I was walking alongside the River Lowther for part of the route. After passing a holiday park the route went under a substantial viaduct, and the under the M6 to arrive into Eamont Bridge, then Penrith....

There was also a section near Shap Summit close to the railway where fencing had been erected around large areas of tree-planting, across the public right of way, with no indication of where to walk instead. I had walked most of the route northwards from Tebay, and by the time I was due to cross the A6 for yet more bog, by a mini reservoir, with the slightly worrying prospect of stepping stones about a mile and a half south of the end point, I gave up and walked along the pavement of the A6 into Shap. Seeing the Shap Summit railway sign was exciting and the section through Shap Granite Works (Cemex) was well defined and interesting....
