Help connect Penrith
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Penrith’s Slow Ways.

The northern half of the route, between Langwathby and Lazonby didn’t work, because the banks of the River Eden had been flood-damaged and were not repaired yet. I plotted an alternative route for this half, and walked it with a friend, from Langwathby to Lazonby (followed by the first section of the long Lazonby to Carlisle (CarLaz) route as far as Armathwaite, to finish another day). From here, a section of quiet road took us to Little Salkeld, and soon after, we turned off onto a farm lane which led to Long Meg and her Daughters. We had a short section of quiet road before reaching the fields alongside the River Eden....

Early highlights include the Settle-Carlisle railway station, and the red sandstone bridge over the River Eden. I was advised by two locals that rather than follow the official public right of way, everyone walks alongside the river next to the line of trees, and this was evident by the foot-worn path. The closed section of path was from Daleraven Bridge to Little Salkeld, although the problematic section was only from the bridge to Lacy’s Caves. I actually used the lower, more southerly path along the edge of the woods, which bizarrely ended with a fence and a well-trodden path down to a padlocked gate right next to the official path....

I haven’t walked this so I’ve giving it a Maybe rather than failing it, but my friend who lives in Penrith says that cars drive along this road at 60mph....

I was pleasantly surprised by the fields at the start of this walk from Shap, following yesterday’s trials. From Rosgill to Bampton Grange, the sheep fields continued, but now alongside the River Lowther. The parkland was all rather lovely and well kept, and I was walking alongside the River Lowther for part of the route. After passing a holiday park the route went under a substantial viaduct, and the under the M6 to arrive into Eamont Bridge, then Penrith....

Lovely route along the Ullswater way and the newly opened and very well signposted Eamont way....
