10 Mar 2024 Winter

I don’t think this route is viable. Apart from the strangely inaccurate plotting at the Shap end, something like 50% of the terrain is difficult peat bog. I plodged my way through most of it and it was hard work, with no visible footpath, picking my way across clumps of reeds/sedges where my feet probably wouldn’t sink. My foot did sink once (along with my heart) as I crossed a wide “stream” and I involuntarily sat down at the edge, then pulled my foot out again with my hands! Luckily I had brought a change of socks.
There was also a section near Shap Summit close to the railway where fencing had been erected around large areas of tree-planting, across the public right of way, with no indication of where to walk instead. I ended up climbing through the fence as I didn’t know if any other route would be more practical or even possible.
I had walked most of the route northwards from Tebay, and by the time I was due to cross the A6 for yet more bog, by a mini reservoir, with the slightly worrying prospect of stepping stones about a mile and a half south of the end point, I gave up and walked along the pavement of the A6 into Shap.
Not all of the route was awful! The initial walk alongside the River Lune, and the lane section south of Scout Green were both very nice. Seeing the Shap Summit railway sign was exciting and the section through Shap Granite Works (Cemex) was well defined and interesting. Shap Wells was absolutely delightful, with lots of red squirrels.
I did this walk as the second of three Slow Ways (Kendal-Tebay-Shap-Penrith). Public transport to Tebay and Shap is almost non-existent, so I stayed overnight at Tebay and Shap. There are three buses 106, 570 and 571, which only run on certain weekdays, four return trips in total per week, timings are obviously designed to enable villagers to leave the villages in the morning and go to Penrith or Kendal, and return in the afternoon. It just doesn’t work for walkers wanting to arrive at the village early in the day, and leave the village late in the day.
I am hoping to try a completely different route, but I will have no option but to drive to one end and get a taxi between the two ends.
