Description

An alternative to CONAMB(one), and very similar to the Coniston to Ambleside section of CONWIN(one). 3K longer than CONAMB(one) and with slightly more climb. The route does however have the benefit of a range of refreshment opportunities at Hawkshead and at Outgate. Another pleasant route between these two Lake District towns, For the most part easy to navigate. Care is needed through the northen section of Grizedale forest as it follows mostly unsigned forest tracks. Also the section between Clappersgate and Ambleside where the route follows tracks more easily seen on the ground rather than follow the indistinct lines of the right of way as shown on the map. An extremely pleasant and safe route

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

A really lovely route between these two Lakeside towns. I walked it in late November from Ambleside to Coniston. Basically the route is copied (more or less) from ConWin(one) which also goes to Ambleside from Coniston. I did change it slightly around Lily Tarn where the paths on the ground are clearer than the rights of way as shown on the map. Also it is quite a long walk with a reasonable amount of climb, so this walk does benefit from visiting both Hawkridge and Upgate where there are ample refreshment options. The route benefits from some mileage along roads which have an enclosed pathway ' "Miles without Stiles" Sustrans National Route 6 is also followed in part. the 505 bus service is also useful as it runs between Ambleside and Coniston with stops at Clappersgate, Outgate and Hawkshead.
