Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

26 Aug 2023I walked from Chapel Stile to Coniston on a dry summer's day, and it was lovely. Woodland interspersed with views of fells and mostly ancient quarries - some very dramatic. Which made for an interesting/scenic low level walk. Decent paths, some up and down as you'd expect in the Lakes, but nothing too taxing and all remarkably quiet. Around 3 hours end to end. (I actually started in Ambleside, which added another 1.5 hours, and took the hourly 505 bus from Coniston back to Ambleside at the end).

29 Jul 2023A lovely largely woodland route that I combined with 'Chaamb two' from Ambleside to Chapel Style before setting off towards Coniston. It takes a sensible route on well marked paths touring quarries old and new. Inevitably, having to cross from Langdale to Little Langdale to Yewdale, there's a bit of up and down between valleys, but nothing too strenuous, taking around 3 hours.
This part of the Lake District has a long history of green slate quarrying and much of it evident from this walk. It makes an interesting complement to the copper mining that once took place in the Coniston region.
Paths are well marked and maintained throughout although worth keeping an eye on the GPX/map as there are a few turns that are easy to miss. Most are through woodland making this a good one on very hot, windy or wet days.
The Three Shires Inn in Little Langdale makes a useful refreshment stop should you need one. The section from Little Langdale to Yewdale / Consiton takes you above some of the more dramatic quarried sections overlooking Tilberthwiate before descending on a short section of (quiet) single track road to Yewdale. Don't be misled by the overview map – by the time you meet the A593 to Coniston, the path is separated from the road in woodland so you are generally unaware of any traffic.
Overall, a great route with much of interest on the way that also works as a quieter, albeit slightly longer, alternative to ConAmb One between Coniston and Ambleside.
