Latest Updates

Overall, the pavements are wide, well surfaced and lit, with the exception being once in Bowness town, where they are narrower and subject to congestion. For those wishing to take a quieter, less direct route, Bowwin Two would be preferable....

Walk this route

An excellent route and not much longer than Bowwin1, which takes the shortest route along the main road. Much quieter and through leafy suburbs, posh houses and a short stretch of woodland before entering Bowness through a back street....

Paul Chilcott

Walk this route

As it follows the main road between the two places, I would imagine there is often a lot of traffic, but as we did this one at night, it was not too busy (but no photos worth including)....

Paul Chilcott

Walk this route

The wall it is stuck to may be private property but the steps from one pavement to the other is surely the highway....

Tim Ryan

Walk this route

Plenty of pubs cafes and shops and with views of Windermere and the surrounding hills....

Tim Ryan

Walk this route

A mixture of quiet country lanes, field and riverside footpaths, and rather nice Lake District homes (holiday or permanent), brought me to quite a climb, past Thornyfields, and then along a very rocky bridleway, which featured a large puddle!...

Walk this route

What a great walk! Starting at Lakeside where there is an Aquarium, café and hotel. The route takes you to the left of the Lakeside Hotel on road side before branching off into countryside. Part of the route is now benefiting from a new cycle path with a few gates. Onwards it heads along tree sheltered pathways and alongside the lake. Beautiful views of the lake and fells. Some time further on you will approach the ferry which takes you across the lake towards Bowness. A short walk takes you into Bowness where there are ample shops and a good bus network...

Walk this route

A nice quiet little walk gently uphill from Bowness to Windermere Starting at the junction in Bowness where the Magic Roundabout cafe is. A short walk later passing the bowling green and rugby club. Onwards through pleasant woodland onto a road with large houses which is very quiet, left at the junction and left again on college road back around Windermere town centre to the train station, bus pick up point and Booths. A recommended short...

Walk this route

On reaching the western side, the route follows the lovely lake, sometimes on quiet roads, and sometimes on gorgeous footpaths next to the lake or through woods. I was tempted to drop a star because of this road section, but as far as I can tell, there is very little alternative, the land owners around here are very exclusive; and overall the route is gorgeous!...

Walk this route

Easy short, accessible route that we walked from Windermere bus station (after getting an open topped bus in from Ambleside). Although on the main road, so quite a few cars but plenty of green, shops and cafes on the way. It’s downhill as well… :-)...

Gismay

Walk this route

Pleasant easy walk between towns, but not a walk if you want to go rambling in the countryside....

Linz

Walk this route

The Bowness end of the route is a bit tricky and less attractive through an estate - I'd suggest using Lake Road to get between Longlands Road and the centre of Bowness....

Luke Reader

Walk this route

This is the main road route between Windermere and Bowness so presents no problem with navigation....

Jo Wood

Walk this route

This is a short route as Bowness is essentially a suburb of Windermere but the route is a pleasant one that avoids the exceedingly busy main road connecting the two....

A lot of people go to the town of Windermere expecting to see England’s largest lake. They usually end up driving or walking to Bowness....

Walk this route

The bulk of the route though, is the quiet and lovely Longlands Road, a great alternative to the main road....
