Help connect Crosthwaite
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Crosthwaite’s Slow Ways.

We did the Cunswick Scar variation that takes you over the footbridge above the A591 - slightly longer but more pleasant and avoids the road crossing of the often busy by-pass....

A mixture of quiet country lanes, field and riverside footpaths, and rather nice Lake District homes (holiday or permanent), brought me to quite a climb, past Thornyfields, and then along a very rocky bridleway, which featured a large puddle!...

Walk this routeApart from about 50 metres, the short section of main road from Newby Bridge was paved or had a wide verge. I passed a lovely barn and more sheep pasture, with views towards the top of Morecambe Bay, before reaching a short road section near Cartmel Fell and Pool Garth. Another field crossing, heading towards Lobby Bridge, ended with a field that was waterlogged so I skirted around the edge. I crossed another field here to Scale Hill, with the intention of following field paths to Broad Oak, but they ended up being so waterlogged and flooded, that I walked along the road instead. (This route is what I walked, if it’s wet, a bit more road would shorten it, if it’s dry, field paths would avoid the road for longer.)....

Mary Oz added Lakcro two, a new walk from Lakeside to Crosthwaite
Walk this routeI left Crosthwaite downhill on a quiet road before heading along a farm track. There was a short bit more road uphill through trees out of Brigsteer, before I turned off onto a gravelled track between the trees. Use the footpath from the 700 cycle route mark to Lawrence House Farm, not the more southerly footpath close to the Slow Way Place because that involves walking along some very fast, busy A6 with no pavement. I quite enjoyed this route, particularly south of Brigsteer, but the road section was tedious....

I wasted a lot of time trying to walk through an uncomfortable field at Nab's Hill, having started from Crosthwaite, when I should have been going along a narrow enclosed lane. Also nearer Levens, the route on the ground is not the same as the OS marked Right of Way. I had been through that section before, otherwise I might have wasted time there too....

The route left Kendal through a pleasant park, easier to navigate than the labyrinth of ginnels and yards! It was well worth using this easy but longer route out of Kendal, as the original involves a scary crossing of the A591. On the last part of the route to Crosthwaite, the wide flat Lyth Valley came into view, with the ridge of Scout Scar further to my left. I am tempted to give the route 5*, but the rubbliness of Gamblemire Lane, and the presence of several herds of cows reduced it a bit for me....

I decided not to risk walking this route as the Google Street View shows that where the footpath crosses the busy, fast A591, it looks quite dangerous....

Slight confusion in Kirby House Farm, where farmer said he intended to ask National Park to improve signs between farm buildings....
