Description
I have slightly updated CroLev One to be more accurate, because I wasted a lot of time trying to walk through an uncomfortable field at Nab's Hill, having started from Crosthwaite, when I should have been going along a narrow enclosed lane. Also nearer Levens, the route on the ground is not the same as the OS marked Right of Way. I had been through that section before, otherwise I might have wasted time there too

04 Jun 2023I left Crosthwaite downhill on a quiet road before heading along a farm track. This soon reached a place where there was a choice of routes. After some time-consuming trial and error, I discovered the correct one is the hidden footpath, enclosed between two hedges, starting at OS Grid Ref: SD 45285 90437. In early June, this was a bit overgrown, and there were some gates and stiles in need of repairs, but the path was passable. It extended past two fields, and then emerged into the sun to run alongside a field wall, before going through several gates into another enclosed path, to come out at Cockmoss Bridge.
The next 30% of the route was along farm lanes, mostly tarmacked, dead straight and level, with quite good surrounding views. In the hot sun, it felt like more than 2 miles, and it was a relief to reach Brigsteer, with its refreshing pub!
There was a short bit more road uphill through trees out of Brigsteer, before I turned off onto a gravelled track between the trees. I had glimpses of the agricultural plain below, but enjoyed my sheltered walk.
I left this at Wells Garth to cross down through fields with wonderful views of the Lyth Valley and Whitbarrow beyond. Walking through the woods at Brigsteer Park was very nice, but I have been here in wetter weather, so I know it can get very muddy. The road to the Levens meeting point was fairly straightforward.
There is nothing at the bottom of the village except a pub. There may appear to be a bus stop but it is only for schools. The top of the village is where you can see PO marked on the OS Map. On street maps you will see Levens Lane. It has the Village Hall, useful Village Shop, a school, and a public bus stop. The bus stop is of limited use to walkers though. It has buses to Kendal three mornings a week, returning at lunch time, and similar to Carnforth and Morecambe one day a week, and Kirkby Lonsdale one day a week. The more practical hourly bus 555 runs from Lancaster via Levens Bridge to Kendal and Keswick. However Levens Bridge is more than a mile away. Use the footpath from the 700 cycle route mark to Lawrence House Farm, not the more southerly footpath close to the Slow Way Place because that involves walking along some very fast, busy A6 with no pavement.
I quite enjoyed this route, particularly south of Brigsteer, but the road section was tedious. I'd give it three and a half stars if I could.
