I started in Hedge End which has shops and facilities, the route is initially along pavements, it then enters the Upper Hamble Country Park (a busy road to cross first) and follows a good path down through the trees until you reach The Hamble river....

Challenging for wheelchairs because of the path through Holly Hill, but there may be versions that could make this viable in good weather....
Derrick
New route takes into account the various marinas that you need to walk through. Very pretty...

Some busy roads, but there were some really nice views along the walk...

Once over the Hamble its a lovel walk along the marina with some great views. Into Locks Heath remains a pretty nice walk. If you need a pub to finish your walk you might need to take a slight detour, although we don't know this area well so happy to stand corrected....
Simon
That said it offers a little more greenery once east of the Itchen and is a solid enough route to take....
Simon
The route made good use of park lane walk with only a small section that was on a road that had no footpath, although we met no vehicles whilst walking this section on a Sunday afternoon....
Gerry Moss
A nice route out of Southampton to Bursledon, taking in one of the city centre parks. Great views of the Itchen from the bridge, plenty of places to stop along the way for a drink etc. Nice walks through the parks east of Weston and on to Bursledon....

Slow Ways Connections added Burloc two, a new walk from Bursledon to Locks Heath
Walk this routeBetween here and Itchen Bridge its then relatively flat, fully pathed, quiet streets. Then to the Itchen Bridge, offering some of the best views of the city, although as it is a long bridge it is another long slope. I did veer off the suggested path slightly as it recommended going all the way to the end of the bridge before crossing but south side of the bridge does have a footpath that you can get off the bridge earlier, so I used that. Worth mentioning at this point that the other route posted for Southampton-Bursledon would have you walking down a busy main road from Itchen Bridge rather than through the suburbs, playing fields and woods. You then come out of the nature reserve and spend a few minutes next to a busy main road before quickly going back into the side paths of more quiet suburbs and then back into Priors Hill Copse where again its just really well maintained woodland....

There are toilets and a picnic area, with a play area, a short detour from the path....

Options for refreshments in a number of pubs en route: the Old Vine in Bursledon, Woodie's Wine Bar in Netley, the Cottage in Butlock's Heath and the small but perfectly formed Olaf's Tun micropub in Woolston....

The route I walked went from Hedge End to Burseldon, starting on the main road through Hedge End where there are benches and a well-stocked, working public toilet....

The route starts at Bursledon Station and there is no footpath alongside access road which is quite busy. But its a busy A road and not a comfortable resting point. And we turn in all too early onto another narrow well used road with no footpath....

My u3a walking group used this route on 23/9/21.Weather was fine and no rain for at least 3 weeks; therefore dry underfoot....
Nick Hammond
It's fine for walkers but a temporary footbridge (Photo 1 and 2) makes it challenging, if not impossible for those with mobility devices....
Nick Hammond
Really surprised to see this route suggested especially when sections are along roads where there are no pavements. I will be suggesting a better route...
