Connect Aberfeldy with Slow Ways
We’re creating a network of walking routes that connect all of Britain’s towns, cities and national parks
more walks and reviews are needed to fully connect Aberfeldy to the verified network. Can you give a hike and help?

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Aberfeldy’s Slow Ways.

An alternative route to Craig Vinnean climbs within the forest close to the forest boundary fence adjacent to the Creagvinnean Burn. I also looked for breaks in the forest to the north, and at one point was able to access the forest boundary fence east of Creag Bheag (photo), but climbing this deer fence (photo) and finding my way to a proper forest track within the Griffin Forest would not have been at all easy....

It follows tracks through Griffin forest and windfarm, but views from the path were available from the great majority of the route, there were only a few short stretches where the path was hemmed in by mature forest. I have given it 4 stars, as I felt that using an adjacent, waymarked path, rather than the windfarm road, would have been better, at least for the walker. Maybe the windfarm road would be easier for wheelers due to narrowish gaps by the gates blocking vehicles from this route. One can gain the main road where there is a T junction of paths, and 100m along the wide road verge takes you to the start of the Griffin path network, and signs to Dunkeld should be followed. . However the Slowways route uses the parallel, and higher, windfarm track, which passes next to many turbines and therefore passes through a much more industrialised landscape. On exiting the forest, views open up again, and the route takes a farm track down to Ballinlick...

I've given the route 4 stars as it doesn't follow the most direct route into Aberfeldy, going instead via the Birks of Aberfeldy. Just south of Dunskiag there is a more direct, signposted route into Aberfeldy. At the road the route is not carefully drawn. Walkers need to do a slight 'dog leg', following the road for about 50 metres before entering the top of the Birks on a well signed path (still the Rob Roy Way). This descends to a bridge crossing the Moness Burn, then steps and zigzags takes the route down through the scenic Birks of Aberfeldy on the east side of the burn...

Walked mid June, the whole path had been recently strimmed except the first 200m east of Comrie Bridge, beside the River Lyon, through woodland to the first field. The route is waymarked as Riverside Path, and River Tay Way. I walked along the road longer than I needed to: west of Balloch Park Luxury Lodges there's an off road path which is not waymarked from the west. The route runs along the road for about a mile southwest of Comrie Bridge, crossing the River Lyon on the road bridge, but it is a quiet road with reasonable sight lines....

I have walked it several times , always in Autumn and it can be pretty muddy. Quite steep path down into Pitlochry but very pretty. Plenty opportunity for coffee/cake when you arrive there!...

Between Aberfeldy and Grandtully the route may be accessible for off road wheelers, but between Strathtay and Pitlochry the route is suitable for walkers only, being narrow (especially at a deer fence kissing gate), rough, fairly steep, and muddy. Further east the route uses a former railway line all the way into Grandtully, passing beneath the A827 to reach a car park and campsite where there are toilets and picnic benches. The route follows forest tracks initially, then uses an old path, however this was very wet when we were there. The mapped route uses pavements beside Tummel Cres and Ferry Road up to the shops and cafes on the main street: alternatively a more direct but muddier route into Pitlochry is signposted to the town centre through woodland and past various car parks....

There were cattle in the fields just after the River Lyon and sometimes they have access to the river path....
