Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

  1. Complete the survey training.

95% of the mapped route is perfectly fine, on good paths to cycle or walk. However 5% of the route is absolutely impossible, passing through dense forest, with a deer fence crossing the line of the route. I explored to south and north of the mapped route, using a break in the trees, but was unable to find an alternative route.

My conclusion is therefore to offer an alternative route which follows AbeTro for most of its length, then the eastern part of TroDun. This will be mapped as AbeDun2.

In my attempts to find a route between Craigvinnean Forest and the track shown on OS mapping which passes to the south of Creag Bhalg I climbed up to the viewpoint of Creag Vinnean. This path is shown on OS maps, but is a steep scramble presumably used by mountain bikers, and could potentially be dangerous if the route was in use by fast downhill cyclists. An alternative route to Craig Vinnean climbs within the forest close to the forest boundary fence adjacent to the Creagvinnean Burn. There were no obvious gaps in this fence, (photo), the burn flows through heavily vegetated hillside and is in almost a gorge higher up. There are cliffs on the hillside at Craig Laggan.

I also looked for breaks in the forest to the north, and at one point was able to access the forest boundary fence east of Creag Bheag (photo), but climbing this deer fence (photo) and finding my way to a proper forest track within the Griffin Forest would not have been at all easy.
