Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

I've given the route 4 stars as it doesn't follow the most direct route into Aberfeldy, going instead via the Birks of Aberfeldy. It is virtually all on hard tracks or roads, but would not be suitable for wheelers unless this short cut was used, as the Birks would be absolutely impossible. All gates were openable, no stiles. There may be sheep in the fields, but most of the route is on forest tracks. Fairly steep roads at both ends of the route. Excellent view of the valley and the mountains beyond. There is nowhere en route for refreshments. Buses run intermittently between Aberfeldy and Kenmore.

From Kenmore the route heads along a pavement with views of Loch Tay. It then climbs steeply up a series of zigzags on the road which heads eventually to Glen Quaich. This is a quiet road, but sightlines are limited due to the bends.

At Tombuie Cottage the route, now on the Rob Roy Way, uses undulating farm and forest tracks,  and gives views down Loch Tay and across to Schiehallion. There's a picnic table at the junction with the Croftmoraig path. The tracks are mainly hard, but there may be a few muddy patches in the winter months. Bird sounds were abundant (in June).

Just south of Dunskiag there is a more direct, signposted route into Aberfeldy. The Slowways route continues following the Rob Roy Way, through pasture land. At the road the route is not carefully drawn.  Walkers need to do a slight 'dog leg', following the road for about 50 metres before entering the top of the Birks on a well signed path (still the Rob Roy Way).  This descends to a bridge crossing the Moness Burn, then steps and zigzags takes the route down through the scenic Birks of Aberfeldy on the east side of the burn. Cross the road at the traffic lights on the road bridge and continue down through a gap in the wall, through the Lower Birks, or follow the pavement beside the main road to the town centre.
