Help connect Yatton

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Yatton’s Slow Ways.

The Yatton meeting point is on the west side of the station, and our route starts by using the road bridge to the north to return to the east side - those who can handle steps can shortcut this using the station footbridge. The road is busy so take care crossing - either at the junction with Old Weston Road or a littlle further back, where there is a central refuge but using it means a few meters of road walking....

The next field path starts well over a high stile, then crossing a stream on an obvious bridge, but the path becomes less clear as it approaches Chelvey Road, which is reached on a path that goes through a narrow gap in the hedge then climbs steeply up the bank (photo 6) from the left corner of the field. We then cross a cow pasture and turn right down a narrow path between fences, then cross a couple of fields (there is a diagonal shortcut across the first one), then go right a short distance along Streamcross before using a better field path into Yatton. The route designer chose to follow Stowey Road around the edge of the village - nothing wrong with this as there is a good pavement, but those in search of food or other provisions will prefer to turn left up Well Lane and follow the High Street, as I did - there is a Coop and what looks a good alternative meeting point with benches. We cross the railway and turn left down Station Road past (or into) the Railway Inn to reach Yatton station....

The section between Yatton and Kenn involves a lot of attention and as per yesterday a couple of jumps of locked gates in order to follow the route, which also involves a few fields with animals though safe. Not always clearly signed and not the easiest route...

Walk this route

Enjoyable walk with a villagey exit through some older parts of Clevedon followed by a lovely walk across the lowland moors mostly by waterways and along a long green drove, with quiet lanes and a new cycle path into Yatton....

Walk this route

It uses a new cycle path around the back of a recently built housing estate to exit Yatton and then makes its way across the fields through horsey areas and arable fields before crossing under the M5 to the edge of Clevedon. In the town itself, it makes uses alleys through modern housing estates to reach the old Victorian town where it zigzags briefly up onto a delightful old path along a low cliff which gives a wide view south before heading for the seafront....

An easy to follow and pleasant route. Mostly along a cycleway using a disused railway. Nonetheless a very nice walk....

Some long road sections, but these were quiet, when I walked it and there were wide verges at least on one side of the road....

I walked this particular route because I was eager to go on a tour of the Thatchers cider mill (directly on the route, the sign pictured that says “no public right of way” isn’t a fault in the route or anything, I just liked that it was a Thatchers orchard!) and check out Cheddar (just a bit further, along the Axbwel route) and I took the train to Yatton from Bristol, so this was a perfect route for my needs....

The next couple of miles are still on-road, firstly along a quiet, bendy lane with a grass verge for much of the way, and then a slightly livelier minor road from Bourton to Hewish (the most direct way to get across the M5 on foot in this area). The route then crosses back north over the A370 near Congesbury (passing a garage with a shop) and uses the lovely Strawberry Line cycle path for the last mile and a half or so to Yatton Station....

A short climb through pastures up from Blagdon leads into woodland on the Mendip edge and then down again towards Burrington on a track through fields, with good views into the Yeo Valley and over the Severn Estuary beyond. The route then heads down to the village of Rickford on the main road. And if just generally ongoing via this route, the 50m or so along the main road here as mapped is safe enough as there is a bit if a verge on the south side. Beyond Burrington, and across the A368 for good, the short section of minor road was quiet when I walked it. A short pleasant climb up into fields and woods around the back of Cadbury Hill leads from there to Yatton....

Agree with the other reviews, but to add to them, good refreshment stops are the Railway Inn at Sandford or the Woodborough Inn in Winscombe....

Walk this route

It starts with a trek out through the housing estates of Clevedon and then crosses the M5 and makes its way through an intensive farming and horsiculture zone between the two towns, ending with a walk in to Yatton along a lively B-road. This area would be alright to walk through if at any point the land is sown as grass, but I think the intensity of the cropping here generally makes the access as poor as it can be without actually blocking it....

Walk this route

I agree with the previous reviewer about this route and would add that well over a mile of it is along the A370 - a busy main road. There is a (not especially generous) pavement along it for pedestrians but fast traffic and big lorries go thundering by, making for very unpleasant walking. I would not recommend this route....

Mockymock

Walk this route

The way begins and ends with farmland pastures but mainly follows tracks, shady bridleways and greenways in a shallow valley, with a long, gentle descent through the beautiful craggy, ferny woodlands of Goblin Combe nature reserve to the levels. There are not many views out for a route that essentially goes over a hill (though open views across the levels) and parts of the walk are close to the airport flight path, but the valley walking is delightful and there is also a chance of the peculiar thrill of an aircraft making its final approach overhead as you cross Felton Common. Beyond the A370 at Cleeve, I took an off-road route across the cricket ground and through the fields by Meetinghouse Lane instead of the first part of the mapped route along the Claverham Road, but the road route is fine too with pavements all the way along....

Walk this route

However, there are several nearby alternative footpaths further east along the quiet Youngwood Lane which rejoin the mapped route efficiently. My main quibble with this otherwise enjoyable route (and why I give it three stars and not four) is nearly a mile and a half of boring road walking between Claverham and Brockley with little view out over high hedges on either side when there appears to be an equally direct off-road alternative nearby to the south....

This Slow Ways route does include two short sections of footpath either side of the A368 at Sandford (best on foot only) and the northerly of these is currently temporarily closed during building works at the well-known cider company’s HQ but it is easy to divert and generally, unless you were intending to visit Sandford, the permissive sections of the Strawberry Line path in this area (closed only on Christmas Day according to the notices on the gates) are the easy option anyway. Overall, This is an accessible, well-used route for walking and wheels. Mostly flat with good surfaces and mostly off-road apart from the stretch into Axbridge, and only a few short sections with gradients and more gravelly paths...

Walk this route

The Strawberry line cycle path runs from Yatton station to Axbridge, and this flat, lovely route follows it virtually all the way. The surface is good throughout and could easily be negotiated by an all-terrain wheelchair or buggy. There are no stiles, although there are some pinchpoints designed to keep out motorbikes which are the width of a bike handlebar....
