Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

17 Oct 2021 Autumn

I walked this from Winford to Yatton. It's a really nice route which I would do again and recommend to others. The way begins and ends with farmland pastures but mainly follows tracks, shady bridleways and greenways in a shallow valley, with a long, gentle descent through the beautiful craggy, ferny woodlands of Goblin Combe nature reserve to the levels.

There are not many views out for a route that essentially goes over a hill (though open views across the levels) and parts of the walk are close to the airport flight path, but the valley walking is delightful and there is also a chance of the peculiar thrill of an aircraft making its final approach overhead as you cross Felton Common.

Hazards include an unavoidable half a kilometer of lane east of the A38 along which some drivers can go a tad fast. It was very quiet on a Sunday, but can be a little busier in rush-hours. However, the road is wide, straight and has good sight lines and grass verges both sides. Take care approaching the A38 from this side where vehicles may be turning in. The main road crossing is OK with good views in both directions. Overall it felt safe enough for me.

The walking is mostly fairly easy and stiles, gates etc are mainly restricted to the farmland sections. However, many of the paths are in valleys of one kind or another or on the levels, so expect some boggy ground in winter or when there has been a lot of rain. And while the way ahead is mostly fairly obvious, footpath signage isn't this route's strong point, especially between the A38 and the bottom of Goblin Combe, so I was glad of my GPS. In particular I think it would be easy to miss the unsigned entrance to the onward path towards the upper edge of the woods at the top of Goblin Combe when walking the other way from Yatton to Winford.

Beyond the A370 at Cleeve, I took an off-road route across the cricket ground and through the fields by Meetinghouse Lane instead of the first part of the mapped route along the Claverham Road, but the road route is fine too with pavements all the way along.
