Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Winford’s Slow Ways.

I suggest a different route to avoid the shown section between Butcombe church and Howgrove Farm....

This is a way from Winford to Bristol but it's not easy to follow....

This route is mostly off road, offering great alternatives to walking on the busy roads with some lovely surprises that you would never normally know were there when you are driving or on public transport. We started this route with a lovely lunch at a pub in Winford -a great way to start the walk. After a short road walk the route then brings you out to the A38 which you have to cross which is the only hairy bit but you have to wait for safe crossing and the cars are speedy so be careful....

A pleasant walk with no steep gradients. Route was easy to follow. Gates and stiles were mostly modern and well-maintained....

It heads out of the village through pastures and bridleways on the same route as Naiwin one to the village of Felton, where you arrive into the lane via someone’s back garden. From there, between w3w silks.plenty.boat and bless.shed.return, it routes west through a field to a path around the back of an old quarry to the A38. If that is the case, I recommend taking the route north and west around the quiet lane (with a cut through across the little pony pastures to take off a corner) instead. The one I put up goes west and north through a scrubbed over area but it is much easier and less effort to turn north at w3w quality.nooks.date and follow the regularly used footpath that the turns west along the edge of the quarry, rejoining the path at canine.locker.dusters***....

When we reached the river Avon we diverted from the route in order to enter Bristol over the Suspension Bridge. Highly recommended....

The first section to Chew Magna is absolutely stunning. Easy to follow route, gentle terrain. Highly recommend....

This Slow Way has plenty of huge views as it climbs from either end to traverse the high ridge lying between the southern bounds of Bristol and the Chew Valley. Out of Winford there is a steady climb up to Dundry, mostly through pastures, with beautiful views behind into the Chew Valley (this bit is best when walked in the other direction for sure). Then, just when the hill seems to have been gained, there is a bit of a drop back down into Watercress Valley, which has little gravelly streams and some damp ground, and a further climb back up to East Dundry. A final little valley crossing takes the route to the edge of town, and most of the way in is via a straight, paved footpath....

From Winford it uses the same start following the line of the brook through fields, but then continues directly on past a little reservoir into Chew Magna. Beyond the village it takes the path south along the valley of the River Chew (which can be muddy in places in winter) and crosses the road to join the well-surfaced footpath/cycle route along the shores of Chew Valley Lake....

Walk this routeA nice enough up-and-down walk through farmland in the lovely Chew Valley with some good views around the area. From the top of the hill, a quiet lane and bridleway leads straight back down again into Chew Magna. On this section there are a couple of 50m-ish stretches on faster roads without footways, one when crossing the Pagans Hill road to head towards Chillyhill Farm (what3words invents.flask.tunes) and the second on arrival into Chew Magna itself from the end of Chillyhill Lane (perform.overused.rates)....

A lovely walk, sometimes moderately hilly, through farmland pastures and along quiet lanes with varied and good views of Blagdon Lake and the Chew Valley area around. The route first heads down to Blagdon Lake and follows along its shores for a while with lake views all the way, initially via the footway along the quiet road which follows the dam wall of this Victorian reservoir, and then along a track by the shore, before routing along the edges of fields and plantation woodland to Butcombe. If you can’t be bothered though, you can walk up the quiet lanes and regain the route further up. The route then continues east from Regilbury Court on the flat plateau through big cattle pastures with views out around, and follows an up-and-down course on quiet lanes and through fields to Winford via the Crown pub at Regil....

There is then a climb up through some woods and a kilometre of track and road through intensively farmed land to Lye Hole, where the ongoing route follows the Two Rivers Way for a while, first along a quiet lane and then steadily uphill through a big grassy field towards Butcombe. At the top of the hill and across another lane the path drops down into a little valley of scrubby, anthill-filled pastures which are colourful with wild flowers in the summer. The remainder of the walk is a lovely up and down stroll with long views of the country around, mostly through stock pastures with some sections of quiet lane walking....

This is suggested as an alternative to Winbri One to avoid walking along main roads and the two dangerous road crossings that mar that route. The route continues towards the busy A4174 bypass and takes a permissive (signed) route on the west side of the road to the safe underpass where Colliers Brook passes under it....

This walk is fine at the Winford and Bristol ends but not good between Barrow Common and the River Avon, with too much walking beside main roads and two dangerous road crossings. The route is lovely going over the hill between Winford and Barrow Common with huge views and mostly follows the regularly walked and well signed Monarch’s Way with kissing gate, stile and gate access. After this the route takes an unnecessary walk along the pavement beside the busy A369 to get to the River Avon when there is a slightly quicker off-road route along the Festival Way cycle path instead (signed from the end of the road to Bower Ashton and Ashton Court Park)....

The way begins and ends with farmland pastures but mainly follows tracks, shady bridleways and greenways in a shallow valley, with a long, gentle descent through the beautiful craggy, ferny woodlands of Goblin Combe nature reserve to the levels. There are not many views out for a route that essentially goes over a hill (though open views across the levels) and parts of the walk are close to the airport flight path, but the valley walking is delightful and there is also a chance of the peculiar thrill of an aircraft making its final approach overhead as you cross Felton Common. Beyond the A370 at Cleeve, I took an off-road route across the cricket ground and through the fields by Meetinghouse Lane instead of the first part of the mapped route along the Claverham Road, but the road route is fine too with pavements all the way along....

Most of this Route is an enjoyable and generally well signed walk with good views over the valley on the way down to Backwell and Nailsea....
