Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

A pleasant walk with no steep gradients. Route was easy to follow. Gates and stiles were mostly modern and well-maintained. Chew Magna was a convenient stop for refreshments.

Very beautiful and simple walk. The first section to Chew Magna is absolutely stunning. Easy to follow route, gentle terrain. Highly recommend.

This is the low and watery route, a mile or so shorter than Winfbis one and almost all flat or gently sloping.

From Winford it uses the same start following the line of the brook through fields, but then continues directly on past a little reservoir into Chew Magna.

Beyond the village it takes the path south along the valley of the River Chew (which can be muddy in places in winter) and crosses the road to join the well-surfaced footpath/cycle route along the shores of Chew Valley Lake. This was being upgraded when I walked it, with a temporary diversion still in place at the southern end, but looked as though it would soon be finished. This section is easy for wheels and popular on a fine day, and there is a busy car park at the northern end. However there are fine views out over the reed-fringed lake and you can get good fish and chips.

The route into Bishop Sutton from the end of the lakeside path is the same as Winfbis one. The last off-road section across the little scrubby pastures is a bit tricky to navigate but you could easily walk along the quiet lane into the village instead.

It's an enjoyable walk, marred only slightly by a bit of road noise. Access includes stiles, gates and kissing gates.
