Help connect Nailsea

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Nailsea’s Slow Ways.

Latest Updates

We did this walk around the time when much of the country had been dealing with heavy rain and flooding, so some stretches of the route were quite muddy and waterlogged (see photos). Despite being quite flat, the route offered some great views out across the Bristol Channel and covered a good mix of open country, villages and parkland. Apart from the mud, the route felt 'easy going' with only one short, easy ascent and nothing that proved to be difficult under foot....

The next field path starts well over a high stile, then crossing a stream on an obvious bridge, but the path becomes less clear as it approaches Chelvey Road, which is reached on a path that goes through a narrow gap in the hedge then climbs steeply up the bank (photo 6) from the left corner of the field. We then cross a cow pasture and turn right down a narrow path between fences, then cross a couple of fields (there is a diagonal shortcut across the first one), then go right a short distance along Streamcross before using a better field path into Yatton. The route designer chose to follow Stowey Road around the edge of the village - nothing wrong with this as there is a good pavement, but those in search of food or other provisions will prefer to turn left up Well Lane and follow the High Street, as I did - there is a Coop and what looks a good alternative meeting point with benches. We cross the railway and turn left down Station Road past (or into) the Railway Inn to reach Yatton station....

We rejoin the Festival Way to cross the railway into Flax Bourton, then use another footpath to reach the housing estate by the railway. Beyond the houses we rejoin the cycle track again as it runs alongside the railway through fields. Another field path takes us to a lane where we turn right, then cross fields to reach the edge of Nailsea....

Walk this route

A great walk - much more varied than I was expecting given that so much of it is along cycle paths. Easy to navigate and no styles. Definitely good enough to be in the slow ways network!...

Mockymock added Naiwin two, a new walk from Nailsea to Winford

Walk this route

It heads out of the village through pastures and bridleways on the same route as Naiwin one to the village of Felton, where you arrive into the lane via someone’s back garden. From there, between w3w silks.plenty.boat and bless.shed.return, it routes west through a field to a path around the back of an old quarry to the A38. If that is the case, I recommend taking the route north and west around the quiet lane (with a cut through across the little pony pastures to take off a corner) instead. The one I put up goes west and north through a scrubbed over area but it is much easier and less effort to turn north at w3w quality.nooks.date and follow the regularly used footpath that the turns west along the edge of the quarry, rejoining the path at canine.locker.dusters***....

Walk this route

As previous reviewers have pointed out, you cannot cross the M5 on the mapped route but need to go a little to the west to use the road under the motorway, and the path down is slightly awry of the route on the OS map - it is a bit confusing if you are walking from the Nailsea direction as I was. Also, on the north side of the section across the Gordano Valley (by How Ham Farm), the access to the road is currently via the farm track and not through the field, as shown on the OS map, as there no access through the hedge at the road end....

JohnMyerson

Walk this route

This route will get you from Nailsea to Bristol safely and some of it is a good walk but it makes an unnecessary detour south up to Farleigh through a load of arable fields when there is a nicer direct path across Backwell common and then follows the road all the way through Long Ashton when, as the previous reviewer pointed out, there is an off-road alternative along the Festival Way cycle path south of the village. I will post an alternative version....

Walk this route

Quite a lot of it is on the well-signed Festival Way cycle path which is wheelable and obstacle free, including the whole stretch from Long Ashton to Bristol. This route uses the same off-road option as Naibri one. The second, more direct and wheelable option is to continue on the Festival Way....

The line of the path suggested as the Slow Way no longer exists east of Court Lane and you need to cross the motorway using the road (which has a footway/verge) and the path through the pony pasture immediately next to the motorway. The second is a currently impassable section at the eastern end of the path through the fields immediately south of the road along Nailsea Wall....

Walk this route

However, there are several nearby alternative footpaths further east along the quiet Youngwood Lane which rejoin the mapped route efficiently. My main quibble with this otherwise enjoyable route (and why I give it three stars and not four) is nearly a mile and a half of boring road walking between Claverham and Brockley with little view out over high hedges on either side when there appears to be an equally direct off-road alternative nearby to the south....
