13 Sep 2023 (edited 14 Sep 2023)Walked from Nailsea to Yatton. A mixed bag, with rather lazy GPX plotting.
The good news is that the path around the building site SW of Nailsea has been restored, on a slightly diverted line. The bad is that several of the paths are little used and overgrown, though all are passable with a little determination and long trousers. The road section in the middle was surprisingly busy but none of the cars were driving dangerously. I detoured off the route at Well Lane in Yatton because there are shops on High Street and nothing on Stowey Road. Overall, though there was nothing that merited a flag, I can't go higher than three stars and a reluctant snail.
From Nailsea, we follow pavements south to reach a good path that runs along the south of the village, then take a smaller path left. I had no problems following a clear path around the edge of the fence protecting the new housing development other than overgrown gates and stiles, but more of this land may be taken by future expansion so the route may eventually change more.
The next field path starts well over a high stile, then crossing a stream on an obvious bridge, but the path becomes less clear as it approaches Chelvey Road, which is reached on a path that goes through a narrow gap in the hedge then climbs steeply up the bank (photo 6) from the left corner of the field.
Take care on the short section along Chelvey Road road - no verge and it is quite busy. It is not possible to jump straight down to the farm road - you have to walk a little further then double back. We leave the surfaced farm road sharp left along an overgrown grassy lane, then cross fields to reach Brockley Way. This road is not a fast one, as parts of it are too narrow for cars to pass, and it is confined by high hedges, but I was surprised by how much traffic I encountered. Eventually we turn left into Lower Claverham.
We use a field path that starts through a very overgrown hedge (photo 10), then crosses a little bridge into a lorry park. We then cross a cow pasture and turn right down a narrow path between fences, then cross a couple of fields (there is a diagonal shortcut across the first one), then go right a short distance along Streamcross before using a better field path into Yatton.
The route designer chose to follow Stowey Road around the edge of the village - nothing wrong with this as there is a good pavement, but those in search of food or other provisions will prefer to turn left up Well Lane and follow the High Street, as I did - there is a Coop and what looks a good alternative meeting point with benches.
There is a zebra crossing across High Street just beyond the junction with Barberry Farm Road (where I rejoined the plotted route). We cross the railway and turn left down Station Road past (or into) the Railway Inn to reach Yatton station.

29 Jun 2022An easy to follow route. I found it to be quite enjoyable. Some long road sections, but these were quiet, when I walked it and there were wide verges at least on one side of the road.

29 Sep 2021Easily navigable, well-signed route. A walk through housing estates at the beginning and end, with a mixture of meadows, pastures and quiet rural lanes in between. Mainly kissing gates and footpath gates (some of the stepover type) with one stile and a couple of sets of steps. Take care on the short section of lane over the railway bridge at Chelvey as it is a little busy with traffic, and one or two places in this low-lying area look as though they might get pretty wet in winter.
A couple of issues:
The section of path from Bizley Farm north-eastwards towards the edge of Nailsea is currently closed for what looks to be one of North Somerset’s current plethora of new housing developments. However, there are several nearby alternative footpaths further east along the quiet Youngwood Lane which rejoin the mapped route efficiently. I walked the first one to east and it was fine but a bit muddy at the start. Another further along is part of the marked ‘Nailsea Round’ path so I assume this is very likely to be decent.
My main quibble with this otherwise enjoyable route (and why I give it three stars and not four) is nearly a mile and a half of boring road walking between Claverham and Brockley with little view out over high hedges on either side when there appears to be an equally direct off-road alternative nearby to the south. However, the lane was quiet and with good sight lines so I felt quite safe walking along it. Had I been able to see anything around me, I would have been quite happy with it.
I will try and the walk through the fields sometime and suggest it as an alternative if I like it better.
