Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

The section between Yatton and Kenn involves a lot of attention and as per yesterday a couple of jumps of locked gates in order to follow the route, which also involves a few fields with animals though safe. Not always clearly signed and not the easiest route.

This route is direct, safe, and mostly well signed, and it will get you from Yatton to Clevedon, but it isn't the most enjoyable walk. There is an unnecessary dog-leg through the estates of Clevedon, some access issues in an area of arable land in the middle of the walk to the north of North End, and it ends with a noisy trek along the pavement of a heavily-used B-road into Yatton.

Up until Kenn it is a utilitarian but useful enough route through the town, followed by a zone of horsiculture pastures but after that about a kilometre of the off-road section onwards to North End is an off-putting slog through some intensively cropped fields which are mostly used for growing maize. There are gates which are closed by complicated chain arrangements, no obvious path and the planting hard to the margins, so no headlands to walk around either. When I went through yesterday, it was an unappealing, muddy tramp through the stumps of the harvested crop but a few weeks ago I would have been pushing my way through lines of tall corn stalks with eyes glued to my gps because I would not have been able to see where I was going. This area would be OK to walk through if it was ever sown to grass or wheat crops.

Added to this, the footpath into Ham Farm at the southern end of this section is no longer accessible as mapped and has been rerouted (pleasantly and mostly with clear signs) to use a nearby green lane, avoiding a field used for training horses.
