Help connect Widnes
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Widnes’s Slow Ways.

Urban to start and finish with the route mostly traversing the canal in between over flat and generally well surfaced ground. Interesting views along the way from the industrial to the picturesque including some spectacular views over the Mersey....

We progressed along a quiet road to a main road crossing with ramps and pedestrian lights, then along several off-road cycle tracks. This brought us to a gated level crossing (trains seem to be infrequent here I think) then a swing bridge over the disused canal. We stayed alongside the canal for longer than Widwar One, via a level crossing, until a wide footbridge over Sankey Brook (unfortunately with three shallow steps down from it) brought us to the pavemented road into Warrington, past some industry and a park with a fabulous Golden Gate!...

An off-road cycle track brought us to a gated level crossing (trains seem to be infrequent here I think) then a swing bridge over the disused canal. We left the canal to pass a recycling centre, before a pleasant woodland walk (some roots across the path) brought us to a suburban cycle track close to the Mersey, with a glimpse across to the old transporter bridge. Another level crossing brought us to the pavement walk into Warrington, past some industry and a park with a fabulous Golden Gate!...

A short paved road walk brings us into West Bank, before joining a promenade that takes us past the church, site of the transporter bridge. A brief stint on a road, but then we're onto a proper footpath, which takes us along the river for some time. Eventually, we hit the river once more, and, again, it's muddy in places, and sometimes overgrown: it's often best to walk along the edge of the field rather than the official footpath. At the farm, we turn down a track (not a footpath, but it's well-used), which brings us back onto the river walk. We're not on it long, though, before we take a footpath to, and past, the sailing club, where we join a rough track....

We soon reached a long flight of shallow steps then a bridge over Ditton Brook. Around the airport, we could hear more of the planes than we could see, until we got closer to the west end of the runway. We got some pretty good views of a string of planes coming in to land as we got alongside the pier of runway guide lights (marked on the OS map as Light Gantry)....

This bridge is apparently a Through Arch Bridge, and it opened in 1961 to replace the earlier Transporter Bridge....

A good route from Prescot to Widnes, mostly by paved road with some footpaths, but there us a troublesome section which I'll come to later. From the centre of Prescot, we take well-paved roads south drom the centre, but the further away we get from the town centre, the crossings and ramps get less and less, which may be a problem for wheelchair users....

Starting in Widnes, it is well-paved, with ramps at crossings, and the route passes a supermarket and, once over the main road, a pub and fast food outlets. There is a tarmac path just ahead that leads to a footbridge at the road, from where we wander through a wood on an earthern path, which can be muddy in places. It is 98% accessible; just the lack of ramps in Widnes and the housing in Sankey Bridges make is not totally friendly for wheeled users....

Replacing a problematic footpath section with a longer section on a disused railway path, followed by a road walk....
Hiking Historian
A good walking route linking the two places, but the terrain and lack of ramps in places makes this very much a foot-only route, despite trying hard to find an accessible-to-all option....

Walk this routeThe footpath around the solar and sewage farms are overgrown and impassable (although there are alternative routes); the footpath from the sewage farm to a quiet unpaved farm road has been closed and barricaded with a series of fences, with no notices or diversions in place; and to get to the next footpath, you have to navigate an unpaved access road around an estate....

The route map is a bit vague, with a couple of errors: Runcorn station concourse has been redesigned, so there is access to the bridge over the dual carriageway and over Waterloo Bridge....

From Runcorn station, the route passes over road and canal bridges, before ascending towards the Jubilee Bridge....

However, this route as it is is not feasible, as the given path through Ditton uses alleys that are gated. I've slightly amended the route as GARWID Two....

Mostly an urban route through residential areas, but there are welcome green sections: the Halewood Triangle; fields between Ditton and Hough Green; and King George's Park. Good transport links at either end, with shops on or near the route along the way....
