Help connect Garston

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Garston’s Slow Ways.

I didn’t get my first view of the buildings of central Liverpool until reaching the first sea lock into the docks, where everything became more interesting inland, and I was less focussed on the view across to the Wirral and North Wales. Soon after the Exhibition Centre I headed inland past Albert Dock with views of lots of Liverpool’s iconic buildings, and on through the bustle of the city centre to Lime Street Station....

This route started by skirting a shopping centre in Belle Vale then followed a few alleyways past housing and was quieter than the start of GarBel Two....

The route appeared accurate north of Woolton Hill Road, although it does look very inaccurate on the Slow Ways map....

A short paved road walk brings us into West Bank, before joining a promenade that takes us past the church, site of the transporter bridge. A brief stint on a road, but then we're onto a proper footpath, which takes us along the river for some time. Eventually, we hit the river once more, and, again, it's muddy in places, and sometimes overgrown: it's often best to walk along the edge of the field rather than the official footpath. At the farm, we turn down a track (not a footpath, but it's well-used), which brings us back onto the river walk. We're not on it long, though, before we take a footpath to, and past, the sailing club, where we join a rough track....

We soon reached a long flight of shallow steps then a bridge over Ditton Brook. Around the airport, we could hear more of the planes than we could see, until we got closer to the west end of the runway. We got some pretty good views of a string of planes coming in to land as we got alongside the pier of runway guide lights (marked on the OS map as Light Gantry)....

Starting at Liverpool South parkway Station there is some walking beside busy roads, not for long and the pavements are wide. Soon into suburban roads with walls made of Triassic red sandstone, so characteristic of Liverpool buildings....

The route is mostly sound, but for me, the routing from Woolton Hill Road to the end is vague and inaccurate, and the walk along Gateacre Brow and Belle Vale Road a long road walk that whilst direct, is not attractive....

Aside from a very brief stretch along St Mary's Road (which has generous pavements) and a short segment along quiet residential streets and a short bit through the vibrant Liverpool city centre, the route is entirely along the Mersey....

Agree with previous reviewer: there is no access from Menlove Avenue to Vale Road as there is no path in existence, making the entire Allerton Towers/Golf Course walk unnecessary. The rest of the route is good enough, and GARBEL Two confirms this....

Mostly an urban route through residential areas, but there are welcome green sections: the Halewood Triangle; fields between Ditton and Hough Green; and King George's Park. Good transport links at either end, with shops on or near the route along the way....

Walk this route

Agree with the posters and reviewers of this route: a full walk along the promenade and the quieter route through the suburbs away from the main road, is much better. However, this route is not detailed, especially through Grassendale and Cressington, and the footpath near Chessington station has an obstacle that blocks access for wheeled users. I've refined it slightly as LIVGAR Three....

A serviceable urban route overall, but it has some issues in terms of accessibility, including a former right of way that has been entirely blocked off by a wall (see photo 1), and steep steps and narrow walkway near Castle Street (photos 2 & 3).
