At the end, we join a busy junction, but, once past the roundabout and its crossings, we join our first footpath: a good tarmac path which leads to a footbridge, which has both steps and ramps on both ends for access for all. Passing a farm on our right, we cross the road to join a footpath. Once over the racing traffic, we head alonc quieter and greener paths, past woods and fields, until we join an unpaved road. Unpaved first of all, but paved once we reach the houses on the left, we then cross the road and join the path through the always wonderful Wheatacre Woods....

A nice mix of urban, suburban and rural, but the last section, along Gorsey Lane into Burtonwood, is along an unpaved, busy road with lots of bends, which is hedged on both sides and doesn't offer the walker any safe route. I've rerouted this section through the safer, but slightly longer, Wheatacre Woods on WidBur Two....

Hiking Historian added Widbur two, a new walk from Widnes to Burtonwood
Walk this routeOnce across two fields, we follow the treeline oast the pylon, before passing into another field, an often muddy track heading towards the motorway. Eventually, we join a grass track that runs alongside the brook, before we take a bridge and follow the earth footpath all the way to Bewsey, where we cross another bridge and follow a long paved road walk into Warrington....

Eventually we reach Moss Nook, where, after a brief paved road walk, we join an unpaved road passing a garage, which gradually becomes a track. This empties out onto an unpaved residential road; as it's a dead-end we come from, traffic isn't an issue. A short stretch of paved road brings us to the next footpath that leads through Wheatacre Woods....

Lastly, access to Wheatacre Wood can be made earlier than suggested by this route map....

Walk this routeA short walk through a residential area, and we're back along the brook, paved in some places, but mostly an earthern, and sometimes muddy, path that brings us out at Newton-le-Willows station....

One recommendation: you don't have to leave Lea Green station via the route given; theres direct access to Marshalls Cross Road from the station....

A couple of road crossings leaving Warrington, and a section of pavement-less road outside Burtonwood....
