Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

17 Jun 2023 Spring

A good route from Prescot to Widnes, mostly by paved road with some footpaths, but there us a troublesome section which I'll come to later.

From the centre of Prescot, we take well-paved roads south drom the centre, but the further away we get from the town centre, the crossings and ramps get less and less, which may be a problem for wheelchair users.

Past Whiston hospital, the road becomes more rural, with the pavement mostly on one side of the road as we come into Rainhill. Past Blundell Hill, we take Hall Lane south towards Cronton, but, with the exception of the middle section that crosses the M62, it is an unpaved windy moment. Although not busy, it is frequently used by motorists and can be hairy at times.

Through Cronton (a lovely collection of period houses and a medieval cross), we head down Sandy Lane: a road closed to traffic and now a lovely car-free wander towards Widnes. Through Upton Rocks Park, then a tarmac footpath running alongside the railway, before we cut through Victoria Park and, passing ASDA, to the final destination.

Not a bad route, but the unpaved section can be a problem; I've submitted a slightly amended route that avoids it. And most definitely not for wheelchair users, owing to a few obstacles along the way.

Shops and transport links at both ends.
