Help connect Tynemouth
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Tynemouth’s Slow Ways.

I did actually make a detour to walk through the foot tunnel to Jarrow and back, which was great, but was not part of the route. It wasn’t until I reached the landscaped footpaths towards the marina and ferry terminal that the route actually got nice. The second half of the route was completely different and was very interesting and lovely, first the quiet landscaped section, then right around the marina and across the locks, then around the docks and alongside the river. There’s a popular Italian restaurant near halfway at the Tyne Tunnels, then quite a few restaurants and pubs at the marina and North Shields in the last third of the route, plus lots at either end....

Good public transport access to either end of the route via metro train or bus....

Most of this route is very good, but there are two places where I think the route needs to be changed; where it crosses Beach Rd, and at the exit from Northumberland Park (see more below.). The route links Northumberland Park Metro Station and Tynemouth Village Green....

Really nice route starting from Segedunum including the marina, sea front and lovely views. Not many hills so an easy walk. The mapped route was very accurate...

It would be greatly improved by the provision of a riverside footpath to connect the section from Royal Quays to Howdon, which currently has to be done alongside main roads, although there are footpaths all the way. Currently the escalators in the pedestrian tunnel are not running; there's a lift or the challenge of descending / ascending the static escalators....

The views of the Grand Hotel, and then Tynemouth Priory and Castle and the Tynemouth lighthouse make for a very rewarding walk....
Slow Ways Darren
You can easily get down onto Longsands beach (2 steeper slopes at either end or step-paths at points along the top), Cullercoats has a steep slope or steps....

Easy walk along the seafront promenade from Whitley Bay via Cullercoats Bay, Longsands and King Edward's Bay into Tynemouth....
