Help connect Jarrow
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Jarrow’s Slow Ways.

I think it would have been nicer to start the walk straight down the pedestrianised King Street and through the Old Town Hall in the Market Place. Unfortunately, the path to the road included steps which could only be avoided by staying on the road and missing this landscaped section. It was a great relief to turn off the busy roads for the delightful Don riverside walk (accessed by three or four steps, but I think they can be avoided from the path a few metres to the north) past the old Jarrow Bridge, the Monastery and Jarrow Hall, where a short diversion from the car park took me to The Hive Coffee Company café which is open daily 9-4. The road walk after this passed the Tyne Tunnels with access to the lovely 1950s pedestrian and cycling tunnels....

Cross over the road going past the Metro Station then join a track which follws the line of the railway line. Then take a left turn crossing another road and follow the path signed as a cycle path to Brockley Whins. At the end of the bridge I had to make a decision whether to walk down the side of the A19 and join up with the original route at the railway line or continue straight on and join the original route further on....

The route starts out in the town centre and goes along streets out of town past shops, houses and industrial units. Then it was a short stretch of Bridleway with some interesting artwork leading to the River Don. It was a short walk from there up the bank to the town centre....

It would be greatly improved by the provision of a riverside footpath to connect the section from Royal Quays to Howdon, which currently has to be done alongside main roads, although there are footpaths all the way. Currently the escalators in the pedestrian tunnel are not running; there's a lift or the challenge of descending / ascending the static escalators....
