Help connect Wallsend
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Wallsend’s Slow Ways.

Stopped of for packed lunch in Iris Brickfield park, and really enjoyed the little section past the golf course in Wallsend - looks like the golf course in the process of becoming housing, hopefully all the building wont effect the route....

After a few roads, and cutting through the small Shieldfield Green, we pass through an estate, under the blocks of flats above to steps or a slope down to the road. Taking a junction to take us past the Star And Shadow Cinema, after a couple of roads, we take a tarmac footpath downhill into the heavily wooded Ouseburn Park. Next are a couple of residential roads, followed by Iris Brickfield Park; more paved roads, including under a railway bridge....

Accessed by ramp or steps, from here until Newcastle it's a great tarmac path. With only a few road crossings, and the odd bridge, it's a straightforward walk....

I did actually make a detour to walk through the foot tunnel to Jarrow and back, which was great, but was not part of the route. It wasn’t until I reached the landscaped footpaths towards the marina and ferry terminal that the route actually got nice. The second half of the route was completely different and was very interesting and lovely, first the quiet landscaped section, then right around the marina and across the locks, then around the docks and alongside the river. There’s a popular Italian restaurant near halfway at the Tyne Tunnels, then quite a few restaurants and pubs at the marina and North Shields in the last third of the route, plus lots at either end....

I then headed through a small park and some housing (with avoidable steps) into City Stadium Park and out opposite the Star and Shadow Cinema. Very soon I walked through Jesmond Vale along the Ouse Burn, and then on through Heaton Park/Armstrong Park which was full of families, out on a pleasant Sunday morning....

Very confusing walk with overgrown paths and steps Not even sure if we followed correct route Would not recommend or repeat this walk...

Found this walk to urban and very confusing at times whilst trying to determine direction to go....
Alastair Wallace
Quite an urban walk , bit confusing as you come out of Wallsend Old Hall Grounds, make sure to bear left rather than follow The Burn. Nicest part was walking through The Rising Sun Country Park. Not a walk I would recommend because of it's urban nature....
Elizabeth Wallace
Good public transport access to either end of the route via metro train or bus....
Melly
A good little urban walk taking in the nearby post-industrial riverside of the Tyne, as well as the gorgeous pedestrian Tyne Tunnel....

I walked this urban route at the beginning of February from Longbenton, (Four Lane Ends Metro Station) to Wallsend Metro Station. The route begins at the metro station and you walk along Front Street turning right onto Caoch Lane....

Walk this routeApart from the blocked section this is a pleasant route which is why I have counterintuitively given it three stars despite flagging it for access. The route is easy walking....

One part was inaccessible, with a padlocked gate across the marked route....

Interesting walk following the Tyne from the Quayside (where there's a market on Sundays) to St Peter's Basin (check out the sunken boat at the east end of the basin at low tide)....
Barbara Scott-Emmett
I walked this route from Wallsend to Newcastle....
Philip Le Marquand
This was a not unpleasant walk - with a couple of pleasing views in amongst the industrial and post industrial landscape....

Starting and ending at locations with good transport links and nearby shops, the route uses pavements and the foot/cyclepath of Hadrian's Way, on the old waggonway....

Really nice route starting from Segedunum including the marina, sea front and lovely views. Not many hills so an easy walk. The mapped route was very accurate...
Simone Wyatt
Not the most beautiful route, but interesting, easily walkable, mostly flat, & some good views of the Tyne. Some parts run through warehouse areas, or don't have good lighting - it isn't necessarily one I'd walk alone or at night. Some stairs....
