Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Slow Ways Darren
19 Sep 2021Whityn One is a very easy to follow flat route which links the two Metro stations of Whitley Bay and Tynemouth. The walk is on the pavement and is paved all the way.
There are great cafés, pubs and restaurants at each end in both Whitley Bay and Tynemouth.
This route follows the quite busy coast road for approximately 2 km which fits with the Slow Ways methodology of being well lit, and reasonably direct. However, taking the main road would miss out on some of the amazing views of this coastal walk.
I'd highly recommend heading down the quite steep paths onto the golden sands of Long Sands. I didn't sample the cafés there but they looked contemporary and in great shape.
The views of the Grand Hotel, and then Tynemouth Priory and Castle and the Tynemouth lighthouse make for a very rewarding walk.
The starting Metro stations are well signposted at each end, so it simply leaves you free to enjoy the walk and the sea views.

09 Jun 2021A largely flat route with some (pretty gentle) slopes. Doable by foot or by bike. Views across Longsands, Cullercoats Bay and across to Whitley Bay are wonderful. You can easily get down onto Longsands beach (2 steeper slopes at either end or step-paths at points along the top), Cullercoats has a steep slope or steps. Dogs allowed on Longsands beach at North end only (towards Cullercoats) between May and Sept, but whole beach ok outside of that. Be aware that the pavement along the top is a shared cycle route, so just have your wits about you. Keep an eye out for the Adamson Memorial Drinking Fountain in Cullercoats, the Cullercoats Lifeboat Station, and Cliff House. Lots of places (cheap and fancy) for food and drink along the way. As small deviations at either end, I'd take the Esplanade from Whitley Bay station to the seafront and curve round the Prom and Windsor Terrace for a bit more sea front on your walk, and I'd walk down Front Street from the metro in Tynemouth to go past the Castle/Priory (plus there are public toilets at the top by Gib Rock).

26 Apr 2021Easy walk along the seafront promenade from Whitley Bay via Cullercoats Bay, Longsands and King Edward's Bay into Tynemouth. or you could choose to walk along stretches of the beach depending on the tide. Longsands lives up to it's name and is particularly good for this.
Plenty of interest from wildlife to watching open water swimmers, kayakers and paddleboarders or the RNLI practising out of Cullercoats Bay. King Edward's Bay had magnificent views of Tynemouth Priory and the famous Riley's Fish Shack is based there. Lots of cafes and public houses enroute.
