Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

04 Dec 2023Most of this route is very good, but there are two places where I think the route needs to be changed; where it crosses Beach Rd, and at the exit from Northumberland Park (see more below.)
The route links Northumberland Park Metro Station and Tynemouth Village Green. It soon joins the NCN 10 Cycle Track on the Cramlington Wagonway for the first part of the walk. The next section of the path follows pavements, but to compensate there are facilities; the Shiremoor House Farm pub and convenience stores in New York and Billy Mill.
As the route stands, it crosses the three-lane Beach Road (A1058) where there is no pedestrian crossing, which is dangerous. This could be avoided by continuing along Cragside Avenue, and using Alwinton Avenue to pick up the path behind Whitehouse School. This then leads to a pedestrian crossing over Beach Road, and from there there is path back to Preston Cemetery.
The walk continues on pleasant residential streets to Northumberland Park which is delightful. There is an error in the route when leaving Northumberland Park as there is no access to Mariners Lane from the path without scrambling up a steep bank. It would be better to continue on the path as far as Tynemouth Metro Station, enter the station to cross the tracks, and then exit onto Station Terrace. Alternatively there is a step-free route which exits the park onto Tynemouth Road.
If these two changes were made this would be an excellent route. The paths are good underfoot and there is a pleasant variety of scenery.
