Help connect Shrewsbury
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Shrewsbury’s Slow Ways.

A long, boggy hike after days of rain, through agricultural land and country lanes with lots of stiles sitting in water. However an exhilarating and elemental route. Pubs in Dorrington....

Some confusion at a 5 path point midfield after Bomere Heath - the locator flag on OS map useful here. Hencote affords a great view of the county capital....

I've driven, cycled and taken the train between Church Stretton and Shrewsbury hundreds of times, but have never walked it. Leaving Shrewsbury on a very wet day the old village of Meole Brace looked, on foot, as it must have in Mary Webb's Day....

A long and beautiful walk through varied countryside along a route that, although skirting the A49 for much of the way, often feels a million miles from the road....

A rare bright day this March but the fields were still sodden and boggy from the previous days’ heavy rain....

To give you an indication of how long it took us at a very leisurely pace (including a packed lunch at the pond along War Brook and a beer at the friendly local The Red Lion in Bomere Heath), we started walking from Ruyton XI Towns (3 and a half walking route miles from Baschurch) at 11.30am and arrived at Shrewsbury Train Station at 7pm....

This route is very long, as are all sensible walking routes between Shrewsbury and Telford I haven't tackled it in one go but broke at Wellington. The route follows the Shropshire Way , the Telford T50 50 Mile Trail and the Hutchison Way in places. Those parts of the route are well waymarked and easy to follow,, Having said that , the Shropshire Way between Haughmond and Rodington is sometimes ploughed and sometimes has crops, usually thee route is reinstated....

Given it's length, this route is a bit of an endurance challenge, but I would highly recommend it to others. To me it ticks most of the boxes that make for a suitable Slow Ways route except for accessibility (given the stiles), and perhaps directness....

Sound route with much to love about it. Pub and camping 1/2 way, otherwise nowhere to get a snack or supplies. Longer review to follow....

Walk this routeAfter crossing the railway line (after leaving Leebotwood) and then a small stream, the route is poorly waymarked and a detour along the road around Brook House Farm was required - and one of the stiles is also quite overgrown....

Ok at the start (apart from poor signage within first housing estate) and end (The end of the walk is a section from one of the walks from the popular '20 Walks in and around Shrewsbury' book) but a large number of broken/poorly maintained stiles and poor waymarking....

Walk this routeThe route from Shrewsbury as far as Longdon on Tern is 5 star. At Longdon on Tern the route leaves the pavement of the B5063 to head north via the route of the former Shrewsbury Canal. There are pubs, cafes and shops in Shrewsbury and Newport but between them are a pub in Longdon on Tern (16km) and a pub and shop in Edgmond (30km). Transport wise, there are trains and buses in Shrewsbury, buses to Telford and Stafford from Newport but little inbetween except for Rodington where there are buses to Telford and Shrewsbury....

The route leaves Church Stretton taking in the beautiful views up the hills and across the valleys, very scenic with lovely off-road route. The route as far as Dorrington is dog friendly, however there are lot of styles on the second part....

Halfway if requires some road walking on mostly quiet country lanes but care needs taking on the busy lane between Atcham and Cross Houses and the short busy stretch on the B4380 road (with pavement) - noisy but well worth putting up with as you leave it to follow the pretty river walk winding its way into Shrewsbury which is peaceful and delightful....
SEB
The route is mostly flat through fields and farmland, with a great view over the old spires and towers of Shrewsbury at the end. The section after BH was a bit muddy through a couple of fields (we were walking in January) and the signage isn't always obvious, but overall the walk was very enjoyable and I would do it again....

Overall, it was a lovely route and the first half from baschurch to Bomere Heath was entirely dog friendly, the second part from Bomere Heath Shrewsbury had multiple styles in varying stages of repair and....

The route from Shrewsbury to Wellington was walked in very fine weather and walking along the river Severn out of Shrewsbury passing the weir was an excellent way to start the walk. This route seemed to be quite safe from issues with traffic, there are good links to bus routes and railway stations at either end of the walk, and a good opportunity to break the walk into two sections with the transport links that Wellington has...

Wellington to Telford was an easy route of contrasts, woodlands where you may spot deer to the new developments in Telford....
Chris Jay
Shrewsbury to Wellington is a good 5-6 hour walk, Wellington to Telford, a further 2-2.5, so could be done in a day. Despite these, there are no pavements along the busy main roads between Shrewsbury and Wellington, and although the main road between Wellington and Telford does have them, it's not a route that I would take, making this route the preferred one....

Naomi Wrighton added Shrtel four, a new walk from Shrewsbury to Telford
Walk this routeI have rated it low because, as it stands, it is not walkable, as there is an error in the mapping after Haughmond Hill where the Shropshire Way now goes to the North West of a small reservoir, not South East. Also the route beyond Wellington does not take advantage of ways to leave the very busy "old A5" /Holyhead Road/Watling Street/B5061. I have corrected the error and made other suggestions, but still keeping largely this route, at ShrTel4....

I would suggest that the straight path from Lyth Bank to Bayston Hill (SJ 46143 07199 to 47559 08659) is taken rather than diverting to Hook-a-Gate as this serves little purpose and adds in an unpleasant stretch of road without a pavement....
