Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

David Sanderson

21 May 2023 (edited 18 Jun 2023) Spring

The route from Shrewsbury as far as Longdon on Tern is 5 star. It's some of the best walking I've done. It's clear to follow, beautiful and relaxing. Even the plotting, which in parts is poor, but not misleading, wouldn't have lost it a star. At Longdon on Tern the route leaves the pavement of the B5063 to head north via the route of the former Shrewsbury Canal. The path crosses a field but when I got to the next field crops had been sown across the right of way. Eventually I got to the point where the route leaves the right of way and cuts right across the farmyard of Longswood Farm into a lane which passes various properties. I was passed by 3 residents in vehicles at low speed who all gave me waves of acknowledgement without comment. It was only when I came across a fellow pedestrian, who judging by the gun case over his shoulder was probably a gamekeeper, that I was told that I shouldn't have been walking there. He was very pleasant about it and we went on to talk about the viability of the rest of my walk but was his observation actually right? Just because a lane is private, it does not mean that it can not be accessed. I've devised a route to avoid this section and will submit it as Shrnew two. The walking went back to enjoyable from there. It was varied, peaceful and straightforward. The only section that marred it, was the walk into Edgmond, which is was along a narrow busy road without pavements. This however could be avoided using footpaths instead and I've included the alternative in Shrnew two. Overall this route is direct, safe, easy to follow and enjoyable. It has stiles and steps as well as kissing gates. Over its 33km there are plenty of benches but very few places to stop to buy food or drink. There are pubs, cafes and shops in Shrewsbury and Newport but between them are a pub in Longdon on Tern (16km) and a pub and shop in Edgmond (30km). Transport wise, there are trains and buses in Shrewsbury, buses to Telford and Stafford from Newport but little inbetween except for Rodington where there are buses to Telford and Shrewsbury.
