Help connect Ratho
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Ratho’s Slow Ways.

Review of Slow Ways route Ratedi one (Ratho to Edinburgh). The route begins in the centre of Ratho and almost immediately drops down onto the north bank of the Union Canal....

If steps are a possibility then perhaps continue down the Water of Leith to the Visitors Centre on Lanark Road to avoid the narrow aqueduct at Slateford but otherwise well worth following this one....

If continuing to Kirkliston or Queensferry then an alternative route would be to turn right just before the railway line, cross it using the footbridge and follow Station Road down to the A8 road....

The half of the route along the canal is lovely and flat but the access path between the canal and Cliftonhall Road is short but steep and gravelly which might be a bit tricky with wheels....

Good straightforward route for walking with the only potential downside being the pavement in Harvest Road which got quite narrow in places. This might cause some issues if you’re wheeling. It was particularly noticeable on the steepest part of the road....

Walked this route having read the previous reviews and agree that the majority of the route is lovely....

The first was to continue along the perimeter path north to the West Gait and then follow Curriehill Road south to rejoin the route....

As the previous review said don't go for the 15m drop down to the Cowgate from George IV Bridge....

I walk this route regularly, although often head a little further West when on the boundary path around the south side of the Heriot-Watt campus as the field North of Curriehill station can get very muddy. Just stay on the gravel path to where it intersects with Curriehill road in wetter conditions. Toilets and coffee available on the university campus, which is handy....

I took the opportunity to cut down to the canal earlier turning left at West Clifton where there is a sign for Union Canal Parking. This takes you under the Lin's Mill Aqueduct where there are steps up to the canal towpath....

I think the best way to avoid the field between Heriot Watt and Curriehill Station is to stay on the perimeter path almost until it turns the corner to head north west....

This route was surprisingly good except for the section beside the railway line. I took a different route which re-joined the original route in the Heriot Watt grounds....

I can't comment on all of the route but the section that goes from Cowgate to George IV Bridge to is leap or drop of 15m depending on which way you are going. You can take the road West Bow to easily get between Grassmarket and George IV Bridge....
