Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Review of Slow Ways route Newrat one (Newbridge to Ratho).
Although it is very short, I chose to walk this route in two halves on two different days to fit in with public transport. However the route itself is perfectly straightforward and easy to follow. The first section out of Newbridge is simple enough but there are a couple of busy roads to cross without the help of pedestrian crossings. Once these have been negotiated, the remainder of the route is along pavements, some of which are narrow as highlighted by another reviewer. The arrival in Ratho is very pleasant with several interesting buildings and good views along the canal.

The route is fine and is on pavements throughout. The road can be rather busy with fast-moving traffic. Once over the M8 there is a signposted path on the right side of the road that cuts the corner through a wood - this is over a former quarry. When this reaches the road again an informal path can be followed through the wood as far as the entrance to the Norton House Hotel. If continuing to Kirkliston or Queensferry then an alternative route would be to turn right just before the railway line, cross it using the footbridge and follow Station Road down to the A8 road. Cross this very busy road using the footbridge and then follow the footway west to the start of the old railway path to Kirkliston and Queensferry. It looks as if it would be possible to cross the park beside the footbridge to reach the track round the airport perimeter and follow it left onto Lochend Road. Turn right then right again towards the sewage works then take a path on the left to join the railway path. If going to Newbridge note Huly Hill, a bronze age tumulus near which the Newbridge chariot was excavated.

Good straightforward route for walking with the only potential downside being the pavement in Harvest Road which got quite narrow in places. This might cause some issues if you’re wheeling. It was particularly noticeable on the steepest part of the road. Otherwise a decent route.
