Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Walked this route having read the previous reviews and agree that the majority of the route is lovely. Having considered the options to climb fences and go through fields I took a look at a couple of possible alternatives. The first was to continue along the perimeter path north to the West Gait and then follow Curriehill Road south to rejoin the route. The perimeter path is lovely but is quite gravelly and uneven as it’s a woodland walk which may make it a bit difficult to wheel along. Another alternative is to use the pavement along The Avenue which is less pretty but very easy to get along.

I walked this from Ratho to Currie, a really good route which makes the best use of the canal towpath then the quiet perimeter path around Heriot Watt University. I think the best way to avoid the field between Heriot Watt and Curriehill Station is to stay on the perimeter path almost until it turns the corner to head north west. Cut down a well trodden path until a gap in the hedge then follow Curriehill Road down to the station. It isn't marked on the OS Map but it is definitely there and well used! I've added a screenshot and a pic of the path at the gap in the hedge rather than add another route.

This route was surprisingly good except for the section beside the railway line. The initial part of this section follows a farm track but there is no path after the gate into a grass field, which had a large herd of cows in it when I went. A new fence appears to have been erected at right angles to the railway line and there did not seem to be a gate in it. Nor was there an obvious way out at the far side. I took a different route which re-joined the original route in the Heriot Watt grounds. I will report this deviation as a separate route. Apart from that it was a pleasant and surprisingly rural walk. The only other problem is the need to be alert for cyclists on the canal towpath. Someone needs to walk the section I omitted, perhaps from the other end, in case I did not see the way through. With my deviation included the route is well worth adding to the network.
