Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

19 Feb 2023Review of Slow Ways route Ratedi one (Ratho to Edinburgh).
I walked this route in persistent drizzle in February 2023. However the weather did not detract from what is an excellent route with no real problems. The route begins in the centre of Ratho and almost immediately drops down onto the north bank of the Union Canal. The towpath is then followed all the way into the centre of Edinburgh at Fountainbridge. The canal is popular with walkers, runners, cyclists and other users, and feels lively and well-appreciated. There are lots of interesting sights and details to look out for along the way. The walk across Edinburgh is also very pleasant. As others have said, there is some common-sense navigation required to get from Grassmarket up to George IV Bridge. Thereafter it is an easy walk down to Waverley Station and the end of the route. This is an excellent route which appears to be mostly accessible to all users (but note the other reviewer's comments about the path across the Slateford viaduct which may be prohibitively narrow).

26 Mar 2022I haven't walked this route all in one go but have covered all of it. As the previous review said don't go for the 15m drop down to the Cowgate from George IV Bridge. Victoria Street down to the Grassmarket is a much safer option!
Apart from that it's a great route with the majority of it on the canal towpath. This can be a bit busy in the more urban parts of it and there is a very narrow part on the aquaduct in Slateford which might be tricky if you're wheeling.

14 May 2021 (edited 29 Jun 2023)I can't comment on all of the route but the section that goes from Cowgate to George IV Bridge to is leap or drop of 15m depending on which way you are going. You can take the road West Bow to easily get between Grassmarket and George IV Bridge.
